African Savannah Elephant, the biggest ones, are still around up until modern times, sure. But they are very hard to tame, very aggresive compared to other elephants.
By comparison, Sassanids can just go to their eastern border to India, and hire mahouts with their elephants.

Adding them by mod is not hard at all, by the way. Someone will, eventually.
Really hated this in Rome 2. It made elephants so useless. They were ok, but AI needed to shoot one volley and they went berserk.
I can't imagine that Tanukhids would be able to recruit them. They are far off from India. Just hard to imagine a horde using elephants as pack mules.
Not to mention elephants get utterly destroyed by even scout equites.
so elephants can't trample through horses anymore (totally unrealistic and immersion and balance breaking...)
