Failed to Initialize Steam! Are you running Steam?
Why yes Attila, of course I am running Steam! This game worked fine a few weeks ago, last I played was probably shortly before Charlemagne was released. Anyway, can't figure this out for the life of me and all Googling has led me to similar issues with Rome 2. Going to %appdata% and deleting the Attila folder doesn't work, nor does deleting and re-installing the game. I can load the TW Launcher from other TW games, but get the same error message when I go for the Attila option. The only thing I haven't tried yet is uninstalling and re-installing Steam. Seems a little excessive. Are there any real fixes for this bug? It's pretty frustrating!

for some reason today Attilla will not load "app is running in other loc" and yet Rome2 runs perfectly fine! no mods in either. any idea why?
im having the same problam as johndjacko and rome2 works fine iv had this problam for months now
I answer this question everyday. LOL ! - Some one needs to pin this possible fix or people need to use this forums search function and or Google. Did you try any of these posible fixes ?

try rebooing pc and then verifying game cache

Delete the Attila Folder below. - Then verify Game Cache.
C:\Users\Jerry\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Attila

Go to the Attila Data folder and manually delete Mods.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Total War Attila\data

Another fix for start up issues that works - Link -

Hey jlf26261 thanks for your reply. I am indeed familiar in the ways of Google and forum searching, but as you can see, I already tried all these things you mentioned. Other people seem to have an issue of "app is running in another location", and your fixes may work for that, however that is not the problem I am experiencing. My error is flatout saying "Failed to Initialize Steam! Are you running Steam?" when I launch the game through Steam. I have rebooted, I have deleted the Attilla folder in the Appdata/Roaming, and I have never had any mods installed. Every time I search for a solution on Google I get "app is already running" type stuff when that is not my problem. I appreciate your tech advice and skills, you seem to really know your stuff, but do you have any idea what might be causing this problem, or how I can fix a "Failed to Initialize Steam! Are you running Steam?" error?

Thanks!

Edit: I forgot to mention that I have also verified the Game Cache as well as the netsh reset and the winsock reset. No luck!

I'm guessing here ! - I read one user posted that the %appdata% data folder deletion fixed his "Failed to Initialize Steam error". Did you try a uninstall/reinstalling of Steam ? Sounds like Steam may be missing a file {Steam Client} ? - Try to run Steam as Adminstrator ? - Latest Video driver installed ?

* Some info and a Link I found -

1. - Well if you decide to re-install you better be sure to backup/move/copy your "steamapps" folder somewhere else or you will be downloading all your games once again

* Here is a Link for Rome 2 that has the same error message -

Did it work? I'm having the same issue now and I just bought the game...
has anyone tried logging out and back into Steam to see if you get the same Messsage ? Or even deleting Steam and reinstalling ?
i reinstall the game and no repair the problem :C
UPDATE: I just closed steam, then went into the task manager and closed steam there again. Then when I started steam I ran it as an administrator and started the game from within steam and it is now functioning fine. I'm not sure if this will be a perminant fix or if it will work for everyone but I figured I should share none the less.
yeah this worked for me thanks alot

I had the same problem after attempting to use some mods on Attila. After removing the mods from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Total War Attila\data everything was back to normal. Other fixes proposed here did not work and I suspect the problem could be that, as a modder of M2TW, I have disabled the Windows user area (otherwise there are continual Administrator permission issues in modding M2TW) but Steam atttempts to access C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Attila\scripts for the user.script.txt which is stored there and something hungs up. I have been unable to use Attila with any mods, they all cause the same issue.

The annoying aspects of this were that the game integrity check found no problems and Steam attempted to launch the game then was stuck in a limbo and was asking me if I am running Steam. Isn't this question pointless? The only answer allowed to this question was to click ok but nothing happened and I could not stop the problematic version of Attila from running. Even closing down Steam did not stop it and there was nothing I could do from the Control Panel as Attila was not showing as running (even though now and then a message appeared that another instance of Attila was already running). Someone at Steam should be able to take a look at that and provide some useful feedback when the problem appears. Maybe replace the "Are you running Steam?" error message with something along the lines: "Please remove newly downloaded mods from the Steam data folder (see above) and restart your computer before launching Steam".

I have tried all these things, but nothing seems to work. If I run my pc in safe mode it does work however, does anyone know which microsoft service could be conflicting with steam? It happens for all total war games by the way
i deleted the game and reinstalled it and worked great guys
