It's a thematic issue. Jarhild's starting equipment is sword and shield and she's shown as sword and shield in her artwork. Therefore, in my game those are her prefered weapons. This is a story driven roleplaying game, after all. These are characters, not just blank templates I can comfortably redefine at will. Personal preference, but there's mine.
In party-based RPGs I use every companion equally, taking the time to explore their personality and story as well as taking advantage of the varied combat styles.
Bellamy, Stop, Don't, Come back...
Look at it this way. Do you read The Lord of the Rings and say, "Man, I wish Legolas had a broadsword?" For fans of fantasy film and literature, chosen weapons and fighting style are a part of what makes a character a character.
Now that's one way to play, sure. Others are going to look at these characters as a collection of stats to min/max. I'm just saying that's not for me. Bellamy was an interesting character who had a fun and believeable reason to be a two-handed weapon fighter, something Jarhild does not.
So could I spec her that way? Sure. But I'd always look at those concept sketches and remember that starting equipment and feel that I wasn't allowing the character to be who she wanted to be.
You could head-canon it that, although Jarhild prefers sword & shield, she doesn't mind using a great-weapon now & again to support her team if the sword & board department is being better-filled by a more capable Paladin.
Yep! You can make them whatever spec you'd like now.. For a price
also you can allways summon belamy in a module and use/lvl/gear him to your hearts desire ! :)
Yes...that paladin is very good fighter and I could recommend him .... he is very commited to his "order"
Especially when I gave him sword of life stealing....I could imagine his smile when he hits evil and gets healing in return ha ha ha...
