The show essentially tries to cram a little bit of every route into it so you get a good feel of what it's about. It tends to hurt and make the story confusing at times but it's a great introduction. Though this could also spoil the impact of a more complete route in the novel, as the show hits the big key moments.
Watching the show will ruin you most of the endings since they tried to wrap everything into Nagisa's route, but, at the same time, if you read the VN first you'll notice how things are forced in the anime to happen into another route.
I'd say watch the anime and then read the VN to get a better development of each character.
VN goes into more detail with regard to some of the characters and their respective backgrounds/interactions, but the anime succeeds in showing things in a more fluid manner, which some people prefer. Each to their own
particulary after a pause without playing the game.
