you can make the leather/fur suit with the regular workbench.
the modern bench is not required to make cloth.
Craft the fur (leather?) coat. Then craft a sailboat and the storage chest that goes on it. Load up on food and water, also bandages / first aid would be helpful. Make sure you have torches. A waterskin or canteen is advisable. Wear the fur coat and sail north from the starter island. It will take several in-game hours, but you will eventually come to an arctic landmass.
As soon as you land, craft and place a campfire and / or a bonfire. You should also place a crude shelter or sleeping bag in case you die - it would be a long swim back.
Try to avoid getting wet. Stand near the fire to dry off and get warm. It helps to have a shelter to stand under when it snows, or you can dig into a dirt bank to make a small cubbyhole, and place a campfire.
Watch out for wolves and polar bears, they will attack and they can hurt you. Once the sun comes up, you can go searching for minerals. My buddy and I found a lot of aluminum on the surface, but we also went into wormholes and found aluminum, tungsten, coal, iron, and sulfur. If you explore the wormholes, take plenty of torch stands with you to light the way and mark your way back to the surface.
repeat same ideas for the south map. gold awaits.
