the next islands are only revealed if you sail beyond the edge of the map.
I start new map 3x.. only forest, ocean; no full desert, no artic...
and build a boat and leave the island and leave the map.
once you cross the edge of the map, the next island will be revealed on a completely new sheet / page of the map.
Like a ore index of ore types. The map should display what ores you will find on what island.
The only ores that spawn on specific islands only is gold (which spawns in deserts) and aluminium (which spawns in arctic regions). All other ores can be found on any island ^^
You are definitely still on the temperate starter island ;) You have to travel further towards north - out of the initial map view. A boat is required for that.
The "Arctic" label on the map has a big arrow pointing towards north, as it can be seen on the image[imgur.com] posted by @indy-anna. It means you have to travel further north over the ocean to get to the arctic.
your main island may be more of an archipelago, broken up with rivers such that it appears to be multiple islands, but it is still just one 'region' as far as the game is concerned. the map you can craft will show only one 'region'/island at a time, and each of these may have colder and warmer areas on it but will only have a single overall region/climate type, such as temperate, arid, and arctic. unless the ENTIRE area that the map shows is snowy, you are NOT on an arctic island, even if the part you are standing in does have snow. the starting region is temperate, so mostly green, but may have snowy mountains. those are still considered temperate.
the area where aluminum spawns is an entirely separate island/region, and you will need a sailboat to cross a VERY large body of water to get to it. you won't even be able to see it from your island probably. sail from the northernmost tip of your island and you should get there eventually. then the map will show an entirely new island/region, not the one you were on before. if it still shows the same terrain as before, you're still on the same region/island, even if you are technically on a different landmass.
elevation is irrelevant ever since the 0.8 update that moved aluminum to the arctic region/islands. if you are really on an arctic island, you should be able to find aluminum ore boulders right on the surface.
if this still doesn't clear things up, you can friend me and open your world to friends and i'll hop in to show you where to go personally.
any thing are crazy here...

you have to sail across the ocean for real world minutes to find an arctic island

Best advice I can give you, Lord_k, take some time where you're at. This seems to be a difficult map, so make a compass, make a map, and then a boat and sail due north, checking your compass often. Your map will initially show only the region your in. Once you cross into the next northern region, the map will change and show you the arctic region.
