Software solution for all the Intel GPU's that don't have OpenGL 3.3
The original version of Grim Fandango Remastered can now be played using a software OpenGL driver.

One just needs to copy opengl32.dll near to GrimFandango.exe and then in game switch to Original rendering by pressing Backspace!

You need to copy http://cristianadam.eu/assets/grim-fandango/mesa_10_5_5_opengl32_pgo.zip in the same directory where GrimFandango.exe resides.

GPU Caps Viewer needs the same treatment, copy opengl32.dll where GpuCapsViewer.exe resides and then you should see for OpenGL "OpenGL 3.3 (Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.6, 128 bits) with 136 ext.)"

That fixed the problem with GPU Caps Viewer, but I still get the invalid instruction dump file when launching the game. I extracted the opengl32.dll, as instructed, but I'm still getting the same dump results. I have 7 dumps with the same error message. I also have the -log parameter active, if it helps.

I noticed that, towards the end of the file, before the game initializes, it returns an error statement saying that "deferred_light_v.glsl" is missing from the x86/shaders/compiled folder. Should I try to verify the game files to see if I missed this file during the download process?

My log file looks like this[pastebin.com].

In my game installation folder I can see the files: patch_v2_or_v3_to_v4.bin and patch_v4_to_v5.bin and my GrimFandango.exe has 2,250,752 bytes.

In theory you should send the minidump files to Double Fine and they should be able to pin point the line of code which crashed.
At first I just copied the .zip/.dll into Grim Fandango's steam folder and that allowed the game to boot up and run just fine. It came to a screeching halt as soon as the mailbox bit started, though. I tried to hit backspace to switch modes and recover, but it was just waaaay too choppy and wouldn't recognize the key press. So I had to kill it in task manager. Did the other part where I manually created the Saves folder inside the Steam folder and copied the save file into it, and that seems to do the trick just fine. I'll just have to be careful that I don't accidentally press backspace and lock up the game.

Seems to be working fine for now. Thanks for the fix!
Worked for me as well, thank you! And I highly recommend putting Steam in Big Picture Mode and lowering the resolution of your screen (I lowered mine to 800x600) for it to run smoother. When I first played without doing this I got audio stutters and jerky cutscenes, but now that I'm doing this it's completely smooth.
I tried to follow this but came undone when I could find no grimfandango.exe on my pc. (I bought it through Steam.) I've tried pasting opengl32.dll throughout the Steam folder, just in case. No joy.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, if I'm being dim.

On my computer the Grim Fandango folder is located here: "c:\Steam\steamapps\common\Grim Fandango Remastered\".

Your "Steam" folder might be in a different place, I remember customizing the path.
Thank you. There it was all the time. So much for the Search facility!

And thank you for your work in making this game accessible.
I just hit backspace during the cutscene and it seems to work with choppy audio. I'll test it your way and see if the choppy audio goes away.

This is awesome, great work :)

Our own internal testing of this found it to be a bit buggy and unstable, so not quite the silver bullet you might be hoping for, however it's definitely worth trying it out.

It might also be worth reporting any issues you find with these drivers here in case the OP has any idea how to fix them.

Also if you find this to work perfectly and manage a full playthrough with no issues, we'd love to hear about that too!
know what would be even more super cool? for you guys to make the remastered version work on the HD3000! from what I gather opengl3.3 has no new features compared to 3.1 that this game is using, I don't get it :(
Ok heres the thing:
Fullscreen: Cutscenes are Fine but gameplay audio and video are choppy
Windowed: Gameplay audio and video are fine but Cutscenes move way too slowly.
Running as admin seems to help.

It works fine for me... thank you guys!
So I'm running this on a Macbook Pro, and had all the graphics issues mentioned PLUS constant crashes (I mean it took hours to get 3 minutes into the game).

Got it fixed up tho (Mostly, still crashes every now and then, but it's playable):

I used the second downloadable from the OP and put it in the appropriate APPS folder, however that did not fix everything.

I waited to access the options menu and turned the resolution scaling to Lowest, Advanced Lighting off, and put it in Windowed mode. (I did try big picture mode, but it didn't work with monitor I'm running the Mac's output to). THEN in game, I switched to Original mode.

THAT has finally fixed the crashes and glitches and stalls. I expect I'll still hit a few snags but it now runs great. This was all after updating to Mac OS X Yosemite.

Any more thoughts on how to stablize the situation are appriciated. I may also try this on my Bootcamped Windows side and see if I have anymore or less luck.

This solution worked for me, but I have an issue of understanding why the game does not recognize the AMD card I have, it just works with the onboard which is the Intel 3000, and brings the necessity of this patch. Even when on the Switchable Graphics software I choose to run on the AMD, he presents the OpenGL error...
I'm trying to get this fix to work on a Linux Mint 17 MATE system with a Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller. I know the OpenGL32.dll OP linked is compiled for Windows and not Linux, so I downloaded llvmpipe and compiled it. I'm a bit of a linux newbie, but I can't figure out what to do from here to get some sort of equivalent of the DLL file to put in the directory? I know it won't have the modifications OP made, but I'm just seeing if I can get past the error message at all first. Anyone have any ideas?
