Grim Fandango is possibly one of the best adventure games stories told. In my opinion, this is on par with movies like Monsters Inc where an entire world that interacts with the human world was created and explained. The idea of a corrupt travel agency to help the dead travel through the afterlife is beyond the norm of what you expect to find. You play Manny Calavera who feels like he never gets the good clients who should be able to get a ticket to the #9, the best way to travel the afterlife. Instead he gets people horrible travel packages, because that's all they can get. Once he cheats the system and tries to capture a client that deserves to get a ticket on the #9 train, his life tumbles into quite an adventure. From meeting a rebel group seeking to find what is corrupt about the underworld, to owning a casino, Manny does it all.

The game is old, and with that this means that you will get old graphics. While this is a remastered version of the game, the only remastered portion is the 3D characters, but the rest the static backgrounds and the cutscenes are all the original and of pretty low quality in comparison to today's games. Remember, back then, this was top of the line and advanced for adventure games. The game is played on static screens where you control your character either with keyboard or mouse. It's much easier with the mouse.

The sounds, the voice overs and music, are exceptional. LucasArts never did skimp on the voice talent, so this game does not disappoint. The music is incredible with lots of jazzy tunes throughout. Mix that with the graphical style of day of the dead and you have a unique game atmosphere rarely matched by even more modern contemporary games.

Being old also means that this game is hard, and I mean really hard. Finding the solutions to many of these clues take a lot of brain power and a lot of trial and error, there will be times when you will most likely aim for a walkthrough because the logic isn't always the easy connection you would expect. But those are the old games that were created, not all items are capable or existing or be picked up so you have to work with what you have.

If you've never played this before, I'm not sure that you will like the gameplay, but I can assure you that you will like the story. Manny is a likable guy and the many characters he meets throughout his adventure as recognizable and unique themselves. Glotis his driver, Meche the woman he's fallen for, and everyone in between are all great characters. If you enjoy adventure games with puzzle solving logic, check this game, it may be tough, but it won't disappoint.

Grim Fandango, this was my favorite game when I was a kid. I've replayed this game probably half a dozen times over the years. I am so glad it got a remaster. The characters, the story, the environments, the puzzles everything is so fun about this game. I think it's time for another go!

You've gotta like story-based games and point-and-click adventures to really appreciate this one, but there's a reason it regularly comes up in the Greatest Game of All Time conversation.

Once you've played it, you'll never forget the experience.
