Anybody else let down by the map?
I like AC shadows, in general i say it's a solid entry in the series.

However i couldn't help but notice the amount of "forest filler" on the map, which often times has impassable terrain ( dirt hills you slide on ) and in general, the forests are usually empty. I feel like this discourages exploration and forces you down certain paths.

i don't feel let down by the map - but i question the "hiking skills" of my killing-machines Naeo / Yasuke. They can kill hundred of enemies, do insane tricks, climb walls and whatnot....but running up a hill is sometimes above their skills - doesn't make sense and kills immersion for me.

the map is perfectly fine - but Ubi should make it possible for Naoe/Yasuke to climb everywhere...

The terrain makes the game hard to play in endgame. I just go back to Valhalla and Odyssey where I can climb mountains without sliding as if I have shoes made of butter

Honestly I like how you can't scale mountains, it make climbing more interesting

I just wish the forests were about half as dense. You can't see your own character or the ground when you are in a forest. I could be walking straight off a cliff and I won't know until I'm already falling to my death.

I get it. The game wants us to go around so we waste more gameplay hours but the auto-route is sometimes absolutely absurd, telling you to travel 10km through twisting mountain roads just to reach something that's 1km away from you at the moment.

Actually it's kinda more realistic. In Odyssey you can go throught the dense green like throught the air. Here's something different and I like it.

Can't help if Japan is like a dense populated forest area. Pretty realistic for that era

Welcome to 1579 Japan. The earth is literally water and trees.
Well, the map is kind of realistic, almost everyone in Japan lives on the coast, because inland there's just trees, hills and mountains. It does make the map smaller than it appears, because in some parts of the map you really just get to explore corridors instead of open terrain. But overall I like the map. What is much more lacking are things you get to do on the map that are not about just murdering people.

There is still some secret chest and animals to chase down in some uncharted areas

Of course they can "help it". This is already not a 1:1 scale re-creation of Japan. Also, I'm not sure forests are ever THIS dense at ground level when there is a tree canopy overhead. Plants do like light, after all.

But also, if it's so dense I can't see through it, how am I MOVING through it so quickly? I mean, pick one. Either make the forests literally impassable or let us at least see the forest floor around us. Not that I expect this to change at this point. It's not THAT big a deal. But it's the topic, so just commenting.

I know and I make a habit of going to those areas where seemingly nothing is in them, I just feel the game overall lacks in meaningful or fun side activities that are not just QTEs or drawing animals.

You can use the katana to cut through your way if you plan to go through those areas. That's what I did, but again Japan was like that - and still is in some areas -
