Not used it much either, but a couple of times it came in handy :)
In Odyssey I had some vague but bad memory about whistling. Works well in Shadows.
The one time I did drop from the ceiling I was observing a guard going back and forth. Once he left I climbed the ceiling and waited for him to come back. And boom indoor drop assassination! :D
Except when the enemies have previously been alerted to your presence. It seems they enter a slightly heightened state of awareness and when whistled over to a hiding spot will sometimes approach it weapon at the ready to strike. When they do this, you won't be able to assassinate them from the front, even if they are a 1-health grunt and even if you have Hand of the Creed perk.
So you have to circle around them while staying hidden and assassinate from behind or move away from the whistle spot far enough they don't see you. Once they attack your hiding spot and find you're not there, they will lower their guard and you can assassinate them.
I wonder if they just see you hanging from the ceiling in that case too.
