Possible to play offline?
Like the title says: I live in a rural area where my internet tends to cut in and out, and is often just down for half the day during network congestion. I like playing large, open-world single-player games like Assassins Creed, but lately it's been hard with their forced always-online stuff. Is this game able to be played offline, or will it just waste my time and money? It's already 70 dollars, so I do expect a ninja to hand-deliver a copy to my house for that price...

Hm, my suggestion was deleted by ubisoft for "prohibited and illegal activity". Which is kinda funny considering that it wasnt and what they implied is not illegal in EU.
Ubisoft might be in Canada, but Yves is from France, part of EU .. so kinda interesting bullying tactic.

Bull**it !! it not always online !!
It says so right there on the store page:

Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-Tamper

Which translates into the game being always online.
No, the fact that offline tokens exist undermines your argument.

Cant fool me twice :)
Follow this[www.ubisoft.com]link to Ubisoft's support forums where they explain how to run Ubisoft Connect in offline mode.

For those too lazy or arguing in bad faith,
  • Launch Ubi Connect while connected to the internet
  • Sign in
  • Close Ubi Connect
  • Disconnect internet
  • Launch Ubi Connect and sign in again
  • ???
  • Profit
I just ran Shadows offline. It can be done. You just need to have enough brain capacity to follow the instructions above and not hurt yourself while doing it.

Denuvo =/= Always online. Denuvo stores a key that is valid for something between five days and two weeks. As long as you are able to refresh the key when it expires, you are good to go.

Sadly, everything id devolving to a Games As A Service model or, as I like to more accurately call it, Games As A Disservice model.

Well if what you're suggesting isn't illegal, and isn't just full on piracy, and you only got warned because they assumed you were talking about piracy since you were so vague, what were you talking about?

Oh, I know that, he knows that, the Steam mod knew that. He's just insisting it wasn't, and that they assumed wrong, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and a chance to set the record straight.

Which he won't. Because he was and is advocating piracy. And people wonder why Denuvo still gets used.

on steam deck when i click go offline on the ubisoft connect screen it goes black for a few seconds then displays the message again and repeats. on pc doing this works as expected. but im never offline on my pc anyway. i want to play on my steamdeck on my commute to work. this is not currently possible that i have found. only work around which isnt good enough is starting the game at home. loading in to the world. then putting the deck to sleep. waking from sleep and playing. this wont always be possible so im keen on a solution, because all the solutions ive tried have been unsuccessful.

Im afraid the steamdeck is one of the few exceptions because of the linux OS.

It generally doesn’t play nicely with denuvo.

Isn't that how games that require internet work nowadays? I might just be stupid but I thought they just did that with The Crew. The Crew didn't necessarily require internet to play but now you just can't play it at all.
You need to be online for activation once every 2 or so weeks, same as most Steam games really. You do NOT need a constant always online connection to play the game.

The Crew was literally an online-only racing game. That was the game's entire premise. It was essentially an MMO racer.
Thanks for informing me! 'Preciate you! <3

Second guy got it right.

Online activation is required (installation and first boot), but you don't need to always be online in order to play.

both the Crew 2 and the crew motorfest had an offline mode made when they shut down

Yes, and they likely didn't see much reason to put development resources into also making one for the crew 1, since there were already two far newer games out and both those games had roughly 10x as many daily players.

Online games get shut down. This happens. This is a known fact. The fact they opted to put extra resources into creating offline modes for the two newer games, despite this being known, isn't a given and expected thing, it's very much the exception.

The same thing happened to Need for Speed: World, to Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, and FIFA World. Massively multiplayer games will eventually have their servers shut down when there aren't enough players to justify the costs.
