But yeah, I know, don't get me wrong, I wish Naoe was the only protagonist, as long as we still got this ninja focused character instead of a ninja samurai mix. It's long overdue for the main series to have a game with a single female protagonist. But heh, Ubisoft sure came a long way from "woman hair is too hard to animate" to giving Naoe one of the most realistic hairs I've seen in a video game.
instead, they should have made him able to take on multiple targets by learning how to dodge, parry and attacked based on timing. and give him perks that allow him to focus on durability and increased health, damage and fighting SKILLS (like special ranged attacks, sword techniques, finishers, grabs and disarms for stuff Naoe cant disarm) and combos, armor meant for close combat and special weapons and perks with stuns and stuff like that.
Yasuke should have been skill-based combat. not absolute-power.
Gotham Knights did it well.
you have the bulky and strong character, but if you dont learn to dodge and fight correctly, you die. you also have your stealth character, who takes more damage and has weaker punches, but focuses on elemental upgrades to weapons and armor, and is great with stealth, confusing enemies, silent-running, even has invisibility. he is also the only one who can takedown (kinda like assassinations in AC) big enemies.
another character has better movements and more balanced, while another is focus on batman tech and batman martial arts.
Gotham Knights is not 100% stealth game. only semi-stealth. some things you can clear undetected, some you can only clear part of it undetected, and some you cant at all and must fight head-on groups of people.
If that was their intent then they absolutely failed, because with the right build Naoe reaches godlevel tiers of combat prowess on top of being a master a stealth.
Ubi did a lousy job with the engravings Naoe has access to if they wanted to limit her combat abilities, is what I say.
So sorry, even when I absolutely believe that that was the original intent (no reason to doubt it), they absolutely did not accomplish any of that. After a certain point Naoe deletes characters as fast as Yasuke. You just need to know what engravings to use. Naoe literally makes Yasuke redundant and pretty pointless from a gameplay perspective in the early midgame, I would say, you just need a few prerequisite skills, the right gear, need to find the engravings (easy to do) and Naoe can become a goddess of combat.
Typical Naoe boss fight in my game... katana, activate skill, boss has bleed or poison immediately after that and I have an engraving that makes all afflicted characters vulnerable, all the 600% bonus affliction engravings for vulnerable characters plus bonus damage on vulnerable characters activate, insta delete. These fights are over in under 10 seconds and the boss never ever gets to make a single strike. Or you can be a total ninja and use the tanto with the skill that auto dodges everything while you apply tons of affliction damage and kill the target without they even getting a chance to hit you once. Even the kusarigame can do that, it's not just for mobs.
Naoe also gets various skills and engravings that allow her to immediately make enemies vulnerable, including the super hilarious engraving that has Naoe automatically vault over an enemy when she runs at him, only some Ronin can counter that, but none of the other enemies. Combined with the skill that makes characters you vault over automatically vulnerable this is undefendable, you vault over the enemy, they are immediately vulnerable, two or three strikes, dead. You make everyone vulnerable in no time and they all die from poison or bleed in record time unless you just cut them down mercilessly with two or three strikes since the engraving that gives you 15% bonus damage for each piece of non legendary gear you use gives a ton of normal attack bonus damage before any afflictions.
And the pre-order trinket comes with a nice 50% bonus damage on vulnerable characters engraving...
I wonder what Naoe was like then before Ubi felt "she is too powerful" :-D One punch girl maybe? As it takes two or three strikes or just one use of an ability to kill people now.
So no, this may have been the original intent, but they absolutely did not achieve any of their goals. Naoe eventually is an unkillable goddess like Kassandra in Odyssey (with the right build).
Naoe never reaches Yasuke's level of combat prowess, ever. You can think she does but her abilities aren't as useful in large groups and trying to use some of the bonus passives like Entanglement can just get you killed with multiple targets due to the animation time. She, also, never gets the ability to parry unavoidable moves.
And let's not forget Samurai Stand, which has zero equal.
Let bro live in the imaginary world where Naoe is better than Yasuke in open combat and where taking 5 business days to vault over a target and pray the weakpoint hit connects is somehow better than Hidden Hand and upgraded Shadow Piercer. Naoe wants to end combat and reengage stealth ASAP, and her kit is optimized for that, not prolonged fights.
If anything, what this kind of feedback is characteristic of is that Shadows is just not a difficult game to get good at, and you can make even combat-focused Naoe work.
It absolutely does fit into this series.
The world is more than just assassins.
Funny you should say that. In the game Naoe stumbles upon the second tenet, "Hide in plain sight, be one with the crowd."
First thing Ubisoft does is shortens it to "hide in plain sight".
Second thing it does is it makes Naoe comment on it along the lines of "oh so this must be why hidden blade retracts". And I'm not even joking.
Like, okay, you chose not to include social stealth in Shadows, I get it, I wasn't the biggest fan of it in the first place. But why do you try to manufacture a reality where social stealth in AC never existed?
That's not the second tenet.
And Naoe never mentions that about her blade.
Ok, maybe Naoe needs 3 seconds to kill someone whereas Yasuke can do it in 1.5 seconds; i have not measured the time yet. But "dead" is "dead". I can literally walk with Naoe through the front gate of a massive castle and just slaughter everyone with zero stealth (including guardians) and let them keep coming, they stand no chance.
You just need the right build. Several engravings here are super OP. Mobs... duels... both become trivial with Naoe with the right build.
Look up some of the builds on YouTube for Naoe.
You do not use entanglement... you use cyclone for mobs with the right engravings or posture attacks, or just use the katana and vault over everyone just by sprinting at them to make them insta vulnerable and then they are dead 2 seconds later. And with the katana Naoe can even deflect unblockable red attacks, just like Yasuke.
So this is not about if Yasuke can kill folks even faster, it's about Naoe being able to defeat anyone and everyone in open combat super effectively as well. Which negates the need to ever use Yasuke for melee combat.
I use a katana most of the time. HIgh level (elite/samurai etc) enemy, run at him, automatically vault over him, target is vulnerable, normal sword attacks and ok, it may be 5 seconds (I did not use a stop watch ;-) ) and the target is dead without ever getting a chance to take a swing. Or I use fully upgraded tidal wave as the opener, target will be both afflicted and vulnerable, normal non posture strikes in quick succession... dead.
Kusarigama and single targets require a skill or else it can be tedious, absolutely, cyclone for mobs works pretty well though, fully upgraded feral outburst for single targets. With the correct engravings you will obliterate everyone with that as well. But it's not as fast as with a katana (cyclone is not as fast, but feral outburst is pretty quick, but a katana is better for single targets ).
I need to add that I have put mastery points in armour damage, armour piercing and damage output. I.e. I am max level and have max knowledge rank. That certainly helps.
Tidal Wave is a skill...
And, yes, any weapon skill can murder your opponent. Yasuke doesn't need skills to kill stuff in record time.
