A Ubisoft developer in another thread mentioned that this issue might be related to timing — specifically, that Shift has to be pressed after the mouse click. That’s a pretty unintuitive requirement for such a core mechanic.
I can get it to work sometimes, but not reliably — and certainly not how it’s intended to function.
This causes the game to play more like a generic hack-and-slash, rather than using the intricate and timing-based combat system that was clearly designed.
Pressing Shift before the mouse click doesn’t work. Pressing them simultaneously doesn’t work either. You sometimes get random heavy hits by smashing Shift, but that’s obviously not the intended input.
You also can’t fluidly do two heavy attacks in a row, or use heavy attack as your main style — unless you find some workaround.
Out of curiosity: are you able to consistently trigger the correct behavior by pressing Shift just before the mouse button? If not, what technique are you using?
I’ve found that remapping the key does help — but the remapping options are limited. For example, assigning heavy attack to the right mouse button interferes with marking, tool use, and the bow.
And there’s no warning or indication in-game that remapping is necessary to get it to function correctly. So most players won’t even realize that what they’re experiencing is a bug.
That’s why I consider this a critical issue that needs to be fixed — not just a minor quirk. It affects core gameplay and risks ruining the intended experience for a lot of players without them even knowing it.how important those hours are.
i.e. I'm fighting someone and I want to use a heavy attack, so I press Shift+LMB+W (W as an example), so what happens is the directional light attack plays out.
I noticed that i have to think about releasing a directional button first and then doin Shift+LMB, then a proper heavye attack plays out.
not intuitive but ehh
hopefully they fix it though
I have a similar gripe over the quick throw button, because that CANT be changed, and ya cant really hit G during combat.
It's Hold LeftClick + Press Shift.
It should be Hold Shift + Press LeftClick.
In the end, it proves 100% Ubisoft doesn't even play test their own game using a Keyboard and Mouse.
It's not though. Ubisoft developer made a post in Player Support thread about this. It's coded wrong. There should be 4 different attacks. If you haven't played with a controller yet, it's possible you're confusing with the alternate charged attack.
Also, a temporary fix is to bind heavy attack to some other key, which works properly.
