Assassin's Creed Shadows

The issue isn’t Yasuke or historical reference
The issue is the repetitive shallow gameplay loop.

I still bought the game despite the criticism. Played Odyssey (121hrs) and Valhalla (140hrs), they both had the same gameplay loop. I was hoping to find an improved Odyssey but this game ended up not offering anything better. I finished Shadows main quest on normal difficult in about 70hrs with about half of the side quest done and maxed out the hideout with a decent number of decorations. The game is beautiful to look at but gets boring pretty fast.

Enter a location, scan for blips on your screen, fight a tough guy, unlock a piece of gear, run to the next location. That’s it. Rinse and repeat. I feel like I was running and holding right click scanning more time than in combat. I think the only thing that created a change was each boss fight was slightly different and finding a random hideout decoration.

I acquired some legendary gear very early on; I dismantled everything below that tier and just upgraded my current set. There was no excitement or progression when acquiring any new gear. You can just ride to a castle, see what was in the box and decide if you wanted it. If it wasn’t for my build, I didn’t care. I wish the legendary box in the castle didn’t reveal what was in it just like the random legendary cache locations.

Hideout materials seem to become useless once the hideout is maxed and my scouts at that point were just used to scan quest locations. I ended up just scanning and buying scouts to speed up the game because there are a lot of targets to take out. Unlocking knowledge points become useless once you hit tier 6. I didn’t like praying at shrines, meditation or Kata because they were the same, but I did like the Kofun and hidden trails because they were different. The guardians and ronin were lame and wished they were more like bounty hunters from Odyssey.

I would have liked it if they had more weapon types or at least more skills with more combinations. Combat felt repetitive and end combo animations became stale. More unexpected interactions and more things to uncover in locations. About halfway through my game play, I started to feel bored and ended up just focusing on completing the main quest because there was literally nothing much left that would show me something unexpected.

Assassins Creed series needs something different and to be more engaging rather than just a pretty photo mode game.

You could have guessed this from th trailers, or seen some footage before you bought it, and there is a reason knowledge can still be accumulated past level 6. The fact that you think kata, and Kujikiri are the same, and get stale, but you somehow like Kofuns, which are nearly all the same outside of the latter having enmeis/bombs is really weird. Same goes for paths, it's the same rehashed activity, just with different steps.

That is sadly the downside to overleveling/getting a dam good piece of gear early on and sadly is also a downside of JRPGs. I had the same issue in Fire Emblem when I overleveled a unit (not the starting tank, never them) and the rest was so much easier.

Exactly, and they only made it way harder to find things if you are a completionist, so they push you to microtransactions for map reveals. It's SO heavily engineered to make your time grindy so you pay to skip ahead.

Why do you think this is acceptable for a 70$ game.

It's a single player game... What's stopping people from just cheating instead of using micro-transactions?

Absolutely nothing. God knows I looked up interactive guides to get all collectibles in plenty of zelda games.
