How is the world, level based or open?

Just a quick question, is this game like the regular assassin's Creed where you travel to areas by horse etc then have a set space or is it a large open world?

I ask because last time I played was revelations and I tried Valhalla but returned it because it was immediately a gigantic open world with nothing in it, felt like I was thrown from AC to AC Skyrim which is not the experience I was looking for.

Aside from that any games after revelations that follow the more linear path if shadows doesn't?

It's open world, but not as big as Valhalla. Everything since AC Origin has been the open world RPG style except the newish Mirage game, which is more of a throw back to the older style.
