this has been a predominantly single player franchise and the only game that had coop is unity

I can see it being a hit or miss if they tried to do it again tbh. There are a lot of people that might like it, and a lot that might not. From a development perspective, it's too risky to throw in without a big call for it again.
Basically the way it worked was that you would pick a hero character with their own abilities, and try to take out the designated target before the other person. You would all have disguises and try to out manoeuvre one another, or, unalive the competition. It was overly complicated, but once you had the hang of it, it was competitive as heck. I think another reason it failed was because there was no couch coop for it (which was all the rage for Xbox games at the time),
I think they might have attempted to do it a second time in AC3, but idr. Unity was basically the "Let's try this again" game, but we all saw how that ended up. After Unity, I think they just, gave up on PvP and Coop content. It would be interesting to see COOP for Shadows though, one person playing as Yauske and the other as Naoe.
But before that, they need to rework the Skill Trees and give Naoe more weapons/Yauske more stealth. Because the way they have it set up, is way too limiting for roles, Especially considering Yauske literally has stealth gear, but no means to capitalise on it.
I would just hope they look back into the old PvP for AC, because the whole shtick was that the Templars were using the Animus to train their modern day soldiers by simulating Assassins from X's DNA structure. It was the first time you got to play as a "Templar".
