there are some little 'animus glitches' you can pick up, and it adds text or audio to your animus menu that you can read up on the basic outlines of the modern day story, but you never get pulled out of the historical setting.
there is an intro video the first time you launch the game that sets up the "you are using an abstergo animus machine" and from there it is all running around in feudal japan. if you pick up a glitch thing you can go read the modern storyline in the menu, but it is unecessary.
personally, i always liked the modern storyline, but ubi is doing away with it. no modern story in mirage, no modern story in shadows, i would say modern story is done with.
