Let's break it down. Assassins Creed Shadows is speculated to have cost between $250 Million USD to $350 Million USD. This game was announced back in 2022, and it had several delays.
If it's only Steam sales which looking at, they take a 30% cut and a $70 game would roughly give $50 per copy. Only looking at Steam this game would need to sell about 5 million copies at the minimum.
They would need around 5 Million copies sold to just break even. Considering you can pay $17 to play this game for a month and be considered a "player". I'm sure they will break even in years to come.
If it only need to sell 5 million copies, it'll be very easy to reach that.
Even AC Mirage sold over 5 million copies.
AC Shadows top AC Odyssey's number on Steam. AC Odyssey sold over 10 million copies.
Can people please start defining "woke". Both sides have different definitions. The woke and anti-woke crowds have serious issues.
woke=dei/sjw/activism sanitized politically correct dumbed down video games
for zoomer low attention span modern audiences
and that is just the tip of the iceburg
But Odyssey peaked at 62k and was not a failure. You have to compare it to others in the franchise. While Dragon Age has always been a PC game first, AC has always been a console game first. Most of its sales will logically be on console, and according to the "2 million copies" number everyone is reporting, indeed they are almost ten times over.
I see a lot of buzzwords. I say as someone who was in that mess: Don't let people on the internet tell you how to think. See the world as it is, not through the lens of content farms and influencer jargon. It doesn't do the left any favors, so don't let the right make you into the thing you hate.
Besides. Up front sales don't tell us everything. These games have a very long tail. AC games are sold on multiple platforms, available for years and years.

I agree with you and believe you are right. That's why I said in "years to come".
Recently a game called "Miside" released in December with a dev team of 2 people roughly sold over 2 million copies by January.
Doubling your money over a long period of time isn't good enough. There are better investments to be made when you have that kind of money.
Hey hey hey. Hey.
I'm buying it purely for the graphics and the village building.
Don't presume to know what I care about. I care about base building every time.
Veilguard only reached 1.5 mio - AC shadows have over 2 mio sold after the weekend!
