How exactly do you put up your paintings?

So I have done some animal painting and looted some but I cant work out how to put them on the walls. None of the customise options show my paintings

Is it only certain building you can put them up in?

it is only certain stations in buildings that can have them. you have to put them up in the edit building mode. i think, off the top of my head, the scout building can have a station to hang a painting.
so, you need to select that first, and once that's done edit the actual wall to put whichever painting up that you want.

Artwork can be placed in small, medium or large rooms. I bought the small room from a vendor just right of takatsuki castle, north izumi settsu (above and slightly left of the hideout on the map).
