The first AC I decided not to buy
I truly don’t understand what happened with this game. I love the Assassin's Creed franchise but in Shadows it feels like AC has lost its very soul and identity.

First I was pissed off to play a black samurai in Japan. I mean we played an Egyptian in Egypt, an Italian in Italy, a French in France, etc. I even liked Freedom Cry with Adewale or Liberation with Aveline, so my enmity toward Yasuke has nothing to do with being "racist" or whatever wokies call us today. Everyone wanted to play a Japanese in Japan. Then there was all the drama about the butchering of the japanese culture. Some things were a bit an overreaction (like the melons and sakura trees), but others were clearly disrespectful. It feels like Ubisoft was doing all this on purpose, there is no way it has been SO MANY bad coincidences. Then there was the Sims City thing when you can build your entire village. What in the Hells is this ? Nobody asked such useless features. We play a freaking Assassin, not an architect or carpenter. Ubisoft should have spent their resources and time for better things than this (like polishing their game for once).

But even with all that I was whiling to give AC Shadows the benefit of the doubt. I was even whiling to pay full price if I completely misjudged the game.

Until it came out officially and then I lost all my hopes. The cringes dialogues, the nearly absence of present AC story, the absence of Isu and their artefacts, the nearly absence of Assassins VS Templars, the insufferable grinding for abilities, the grinding for ressources, the return of Odyssey loot system, the return of territory quest system like in Valhalla. But the worst of all was the battle pass thing. Seriously ? A battle pass in a singleplayer game ? The in-game shop was already a shame and everyone was mocking Ubisoft for their greediness for years now. But somehow they managed to do something even worse.

I am done with this studio. I think if Ubisoft go bankrupt at this point it would be a mercy for them and their customers. But at the same time I really hope someone will buy the company and reorganise this mess, because I think Ubisoft might still be saved if things change drastically in this studio. But until then Ubisoft is cooked for now.

So if you are an AC fan, do yourself a favour and avoid this game entirely. Or wait a big sale. This game doesn’t deserve our money and our time. We shouldn’t encourage Ubisoft to go down this route for this beloved franchise even further. Yes it’s hard when you are a fan of AC or Ubisoft (like a I am myself, don’t mistake me), but at this point it is the best thing to do for both the studio and us customers.

So what ? I should feel ashamed because I (among a lot of AC fans) wanted to play a Japanese in Japan instead ? What it has to do with the country I am from ? If Ubisoft made a game where we play an African in South Africa, I wouldn’t have complained at all about this. I would have been thrilled at this idea, to be honest. This is what they should have done if they wanted so badly for us to play a black character. But Yasuke isn’t even the major problem in Shadows. He is just one mistake among tons of other problems. This is why I am complaining. There is so much bad decisions that it became overwhelming. And I think we must address this fact and the downgrade of Ubisoft games in general instead of keeping our mouth shuts every time.
You do know you can play basically the entire game as Naoe right?
For god sake, you inhale more copium than an entire football crowd.

Because I pointed out that there's a second character you can play as? Lol why are you so upset over this game?

Same, and I don't understand how this game was passed under DEI rules.

We're constantly told that REPRESENTATION MATTERS, but under DEI rules, not if you're an East Asian male. Anyone who argues against representation for East Asian Males - especially in an Asian setting - is racist as far as I'm concerned.

I really don’t understand why you guys focus on Yasuke when he is not even the biggest problem this game has.

I love Ubisoft. I love Assassin's Creed. But this ? I can’t say nothing anymore. This is why the studio is in trouble those last years, because we have been too much lenient. Today everyone is complaining about games filled to the brim with bugs, woke stories, gameplay made for the "modern audience", battle passes, etc. We have this now because not enough people complained when we should have (including myself). Now we have this sort of games. Sure some of them are fine, AC Shadows is fine. But we are speaking about AAA games (or even AAAA), "fine" isn’t enough both for gamers and the studios.

They had such a great recipe for good games until the complete shift with AC Origins. Then every new AC games became a diluted version of what AC truly was. Until Shadows where they completely thrown away the main storyline of Assassin’s Creed, along with every duality between the Assassin and the Templars (and at an extent with concepts like the eternal clash of Order and Chaos), thoughtful themes and more grey stories when the line between good and evil is more blurry. This is what Assassin's Creed was about initially. Now look what has been left with Shadows. Almost nothing. And this is just the top of the iceberg.

I was the same way, but they're all still worth playing in their own way. They may not be assassin's creed but that doesn't mean they're bad, go into them as if they're something else. Syndicate was the last Assassin's Creed and it was the best. A bit too short but it was Assassin's Creed at it's prime. They really never should have changed the formula and instead innovated on Syndicate's formula. But it is what it is.

You just have to turn off your brain and approach the game as if it's something else. You play games other than Assassin's Creed right? Just because these games don't feel like Assassin's Creed anymore, doesn't mean you can't find something to love about them such as the exploration, it's a petty reason to miss out on them. That's how I got through Odyssey, I told myself "okay, this isn't Assassin's Creed, I'll just pretend it's a different big release and enjoy it for what it is." I ended up completing the main game, killing all the order members, finishing every side-quest in the entire game, filling out the entire map, and completing all the DLC 100%. It was a very memorable experience and I had 100's of pictures along the way that I still look at from time to time for nostalgia of my first play through when my parent's were still living. They never played a game in their life, but I shared a ton of the photos I took of the landscapes with them and some of the stories of my adventures. :)

giving examples of terrible stealth gameplay is just "cherry-picking", not like every example you see is some of the lamest "stealth" in any game post 1998

Ubislop delayed the game to polish it how many excuses do we have to tolerate with all this AAA company keep promising? Even a playstation 2 title runs better than this game

I usually play games before giving my thoughts. Especially when it comes for franchise I love like this one. But there has been so much drama and backlash over this game I decided to watch different reviews/playthrough instead before buying (a sound move to do when you are hesitating). What I learned afterward is everything I wrote on my original post. Thankfully we have the Internet to inform ourself with a lot of different points of view when we actively search something and are whiling to look at both sides of the story. But it looks like such concepts are too much complicated for some people on this forum.
