It's not "better", it's different:
  • First, in Dig or Die your main objective is to build a strong base with heavy defenses (turrets, walls, auto-repair machines, etc.). As in a tower defense game, massive waves of monsters attack each night. It's really at the core of the gameplay : during the day you explore the world in order to find ores & ingredients to improve your defenses for the night.
  • The digging process is much faster than in Terraria/Starbound, from the start. So you can spend more time exploring and building your defenses.
  • Physics for buildings: the buildings have a weight and if they are not built strong enough (or if attacked by monsters) they will collapse. It's a bit like the bridge constructions games, not as precise but it's working good enough. No "sky bridge" here! And you'll have to build large bridges and high towers to access some remote locations and retrieve some rare minerals or items...
  • I developed an innovative simulation of water, with rain, runoff, infiltration, trickle, undergrounds rivers and lakes and more... That may be dangerous when you go underground, but with a little digging you will be able to use it to improve your defenses or irrigate your crop (crops to be coming during early access :-)). And it's very fun to play with!
  • Monsters behavior: no monster will be able to teleport, or move "in the background", or do magical things like that. If you build a concrete block, that will stop any enemy. Well, at least until the enemy crushes it :-) And they are intelligent, they'll try to attack your defenses at their weakest points.
  • Real Science-Fiction: no swords, medieval stuff or flying clowns here, only laser weapons and modern things like that. The ranged weapons gameplay feelings are really the priority here.

I made this game because I really loved Terraria, and I thought there were a lot of things I would have liked to be different. So yes it belongs to the Terraria genre, but the gameplay is really different.

Starbound also have rain, terraria have underground lakes, but nvm.

Will there be character customization?
And so... Workshop?
And... *nix support?

Starbound & Terraria have rain & lakes & oceans but not a global water cycle simulation : here it rains, and it's the rain's water that infiltrates into the ground (and trickle), or stream if too much of it or if on waterproof rocks, and creates natural rivers, lakes etc. You can make dams and drain a whole area, or on the contrary flood it (killing all the plants in both case), create your own huge oceans, etc. And even if you are very far away from it, as the simulation is in real-time in the whole world.

Unfortunately no character customization, and for now neither workshop nor lunix support... I would love to do all three (and mac support too) but that will depend on the sales so I prefer not to give any empty promises

You seem to understand early access and game development alot better then about 99% of the others trying to sell a game.

Its still a clone no matter what "new features" it may have and quite honestly im getting a bit tired of all the minecraft/terriera /starbound rip offs out there lately. It seems of late that game devs and even indy devs are going to the "me too" approach and just copying whatever is the "popular" type of game lately with "some" innovations but not enough to really stand out

steam is becoming deluded with minecraft/terriera/starbound clones thats all im saying. and yes i know the concept of early acess but rather then buy a game that has "some" diffrent features from another. Id like to see something that stands out more on its on and doesnt look "almost" like whats already out there.

just saying. but hey good luck.

You may be right but then there would only be around 10 games in the world that are not a ripoff of other games : 1 FPS, 1 RTS, 1 RPG, 1 2D platformer, 1 racing game, etc. :-)

So more seriously no it's not a clone mostly because the "tower defense" aspect is not just a feature of the game. It's the core of the gameplay, you spend a lot of time thinking how to organize your defenses to be most effective, and improving them, like in a tower defense game. And when you are not doing it directly, you are exploring & collecting resources required to do it.

lol people calling this a clone
it's like they have no concept of the difference between aesthetics and mechanics

Hey devguy. Good luck with this game. I like the premise and am looking forward to the final product.

>tower defence mechanics

emmmh, "craft the world"?
Gaddy Games  [developer] Mar 1, 2015 @ 1:09am
Yep I must try this game it looks quite fun, and very original as we don't control directly the dwarfs. Dungeon Keeper FTW :-)
emp456 Mar 2, 2015 @ 1:51am
Yes, craft the world is quite fun, you should play it! :) Also, Crea, Edge of Space...even 7 Days to Die or Darkout.

I don't mind about "clone" games. All games are more or less clones to each other. What matters is the feeling and the fun. As long as your game is fun, we are going to play it.

The only thing i'm worried about your approach is those night hordes that could force you to play in a way with less freedom than in other building-sandbox games.

Good luck and see you in a couple of days!
Gaddy Games  [developer] Mar 2, 2015 @ 3:09am
The only problem to play all that is I don't have time at all... and there is also this -70% on Banished that is so seductive...

About the "less freedom" approach you may be right. What I did is that only monsters you have already killed attack you at night. So if you choose to take your time and do not attack new monsters, the nights won't be too hard to survive, and if you build enough defenses you won't even have to shoot as the turrets will do all the stuff. So you can do some crafting and planning for your next explorations during the night.

the real weakpoint i see here is that it is singleplayer only (atm). The real fun of games like these is doing the stuff with a friend. Playing Terraria or other games like these is fun alone for some time, but there is a point where it gets really boring and getting a friend in is a thing to extend the fun infinite.
If this game stays without a coop multiplayer, its no thing for me. There are enough games to enjoy with the same concept and they have a good singleplayer AND coop. I would like to play it because i like the style and some ideas of the mechanics (water cycle sounds promising and interesting), however, without any coop this has no sense for me.

So i hope it will have coop in future, if so i will add the game to my lib. I will now dig a bit deeper into information, because i just looked at some basic information and directly went in to say that.
So if you already mention that you will coop, somewhere on the front page, excuse me ;o)

Edit: i can see you said multiplayer modes on the front page, but i couldnt find some specific information about it, nor could i find out whether this will be competitive or cooperative.
I imagine the game could be fun in the way Terraria was/is, with playing in such a sandbox world with a friend together. Build stuff together, fight together and if you want so, also against each other.
So will something like that happen or not?

Oh, yes, also Banished. Too much games and too few time, i agree :P

About night, after seeing gameplay video, the problem is that probably you will have to kill enemies anyway (at least those jumping dogs) because they seem to spawn everywhere and go after you so no choose here. But cannot judge before play so i'll wait until then.

Anyway, seemed interesting. After looking the gameplay video, i know it is. Thank you!

@NemesisZidar :
I have planned to develop the multiplayer, but it's not done yet. And as i don't want to make empty promises I did not add it as a game feature in steam, nor in the game description (only in the early access planned content).
What i cannot say is when it will be done : if the early access has enough sales i will be able to work full time on it and it should take around 5 months to finish the game, if not i will have to work on other missions as i did during the greenlight. That will delay the release until maybe 2016.
That's why i set the price at $3 only for now, and $12 when all solo and multiplayer content will be done. No false promises, you pay only for what is done. And if you buy it now all future content will be bonus :)

Anyway, what i intend to do for multiplayer is a basic coop / team vs team, working as the solo campaign, and also a few multiplayer modes, on smaller maps with special rules, to be able to play some fun and short games. Like a mode "Flood" where is rains all the times, you start in the deep underground and you have to climp up to the surface and try to survive as long as possible.. or prevent the others to do so

@emp456 : they spawn outside the screen, so if you stay in your base during the nigh no problem, your defenses can protect you. You can also build advanced outpost, or build the teleporters to go back quickly to your base
Buntkreuz Mar 2, 2015 @ 9:24am
hi, thanks for your reply. So if there will be coop, this coop would run under normal standard settings as the campaign does right? Only the versus modes are (would be) on smaller maps and special settings?
