Whats up with the golden monkeys?

I found these hidden golden monkeys on some levels im sure there is 1 on each tho.
Still the biggest question is why? Cant collect it, cant shoot it they are just there.
What is the purpose of these?

ye the easy one to find is the first level with the key that lets you into the final room just before the 6 cats room, it is on the table in the room with the door lock

cant shoot them cant pick them up dont think i have seen one in a film before but it could be a easter egg from a movie

It could be a nod to 'Tales of the Gold Monkey' an '80s American TV Show set in the late 1930s much in the same way as Indiana Jones films.

I have found also a weird chamber in the temple map. It has a chicken idol inside but no loot. This game is so bizarre, haha.
