Steam Achievements

Do I have to go out of my way to get the achievements, or do I get them naturally while playing the game?

The Higurashi visual novels are kinetic novels, so you automatically get most of the achievements just by reading the main story.
Just make sure to read all tips, and to read the after-party story after finishing the main story.

There are very few exceptions where you have to do something else to get achievements in the Higurashi novels iirc.

If you're intending to read the whole series, check out the requirement for the "The Possibilities of Forever" achievement in Ch.8 Matsuribayashi.
Also, in Ch.4 Himatsubushi, there's a choice in one of the tips. It's possible that you have to read this tip twice (once with each choice) to get the achievement for reading all tips, but I don't know.
