Yes, it is the same story. The visual novel has more details than the anime however so it is worth checking out even if you've watched the anime.

From what I've heard, the anime is widely considered to be a really poor adaption of the VNs, so you should probably try to forget everything about it when reading them.

Higurashi was, nevertheless, a hit, and while it cuts out a lot of thing, it's ultimately an interesting watch (if you don't knoe the story), and that's what matters. Umineko's adaptation, on the other hand, is generally considered a mess that should be avoided.

Just like most TV shows, movies, and anime that are adapted from a book or something, there's a distinct difference between the original and the adaptation. Take the Harry Potter series as an example. They were originally books that were made into movies. The movies closely follows the original story, but with some edits, such as a scene that was present in the book not being present in the movie. Same applies to Higurashi. Most of the story in the anime is adapted from the original VNs, so the VN gets you the full experience.

From what I've heard, the Higurashi anime severely misrepresents the tone of the VNs though. I don't think the Harry Potter movies did that.

The VN is suspense/mystery.

The anime is guro.

The anime also cuts out a lot of exposition and buildup.

The story is basically the same, but the visual novel goes into more depth. Also, I think the anime pushes the horror/gore angle more than the VN, so you get two different spins on the story. I like both, but I think I prefer the anime, just because I get to sit back and watch it play out, rather than the VN where I have to click the mouse every 6 seconds lol

The anime is pretty much a cut-down version of the VN. The VN spends more time building characters and the suspense, whereas the anime jumps into the horror much faster in each arc.

Then why don't you use auto mode?

As in a lot of cases, the anime is a lot easier to get through (in terms of time spent) but the visual novel fleshes out the characters and their motivations more.
People have said that the anime is not a good adaptation but I disagree. I will admit, having now played the VN, that there are some things that the show omits that make certain character motivations unreasonable or at the very least rushed. To be fair, they had a lot of arcs to cover and only so many episodes to cover a ton of backstory.
However, I still think the show did a great job with its pacing. It managed to balance exposition scenes with light-hearted character building scenes with tense and eye-opening scenes.
Sorry, turned into a bit of a rant there. Just hear so many people say that its a bad adaptation and I can't understand why they would say that - especially when there's the Umineko anime to compare it with (yikes!).

Well, because I got the PS3 voice mod, and I don't want to risk skipping the acting. :,(

I agree with you here. The anime wasn't bad, though it wasn't quite true to the VN. It skipped over some scenes, character interactions, and a lot of Hinamizawa's history (scenes that were interesting but also many walls of text in the VN), but covered the main (and some more minor) plot points and events pretty well. If anything, the Higu anime was actually quite enjoyable even if it wasn't a 1:1 reproduction of the VN.

A bit unrelated, but I also think saying that the anime was a gorefest is wrong. When I first watched the anime, I had decided to because I'd heard there were a lot of horror and gore elements and had already seen some of the Meakashi torture/murder scenes on Youtube. However, I was instead greeted with a lot more mystery/suspense and lighthearted comedy. Yes, there was horror and gore occasionally, but it was nowhere near as much as I had been told to expect.
