Weapon Upgrades
Hey,
I don't know if I just don't understand the mechanic, but to upgrade a weapon, you just buy a similar one and combine them. But what about the "trash"? The old weapon blocks a slot for the whole run? So if I want a massive upgraded weapon, I have to wait for it to spawn in the shop to get it to all 5 slots to get it as max as possible?

Later in the game, you start with a Tier 2 weapon, so you only need one additional Tier 2 weapon to upgrade it to Tier 3. So yes, that weapon will take up ONE slot.

But upgrading weapon tiers is only one part of the system. A much more important mechanic is transferring stats and damage from one weapon to another. You can merge any weapon with any other weapon.

The main benefit of merging is that you transfer the FLAT damage value from the second weapon. Before doing that, though, it's usually worth upgrading that weapon first.

For example, if you take a high-damage, slow weapon like the Lance/Spear and merge it into a fast weapon like a Minigun, you can get a very large damage boost because you're transferring that flat damage value to a weapon with a much higher attack speed.

Learning which weapons are worth merging is something you naturally figure out while playing. At the beginning, it's not really necessary to understand it deeply to complete the game on Mercy difficulty, but on Inferno it becomes more important.

There's also a Codex in the game, so it's worth checking the tips there, as well as the hints shown on individual weapons.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
