How do you learn and/or get spells . . . he asks innocently
This is probably the stupidest of stupid newbie questions. I just hit level 5, so I'm as green as they get. But, I don't have any spells, or at least I don't think I do. I chose the fighter class (can't remember what it was called), but I understand from playing Skyrim that anyone can learn and cast spells.

So, where do I find my spells? Do I start with any? Where do I learn more spells? Once I learn spells, how do I cast them? Do you have to assign them to the hotbar? If so, that seems very limiting, with only five hotbar slots, and spell competing with skills for space.

Thank you for any help!

For one thing, join the mages guild if you haven't already. Depending on class you not have many spells other than the Mages Guild Skill line but any class can equip the resto and destro staffs. Equip one and use it often to level up one of those skill lines. When you reach level 15 you are given a second weapon, 5 skill, one ult hot bar for a total of 10 skills, two ults and two weapon sets. Hope that made sense, I'm a little sleep deprived atm.

Note that, when you reach level 15, you can switch to a low level weapon/skill-line before completing quests to level it up without needing to use it. Hope this helps.

Press K to get to your skill setup page. You can spend skill points and choose your skill loadout here.

You can only have 5 active skills (plus an ultimate) at one time, but when you get to level 15, you unlock weapon swapping which also gives you another skill loadout.

Keep in mind that if you have a skill to summon a minion on one loadout and not the other, the minion will die when you switch weapons.

Also, passives do not need to be slotted and are ALWAYS active, but some passives only have effects that trigger with a certain weapon or skill usage.

You don't START with any skills, but you should level a few times by the end of the jail tutorial thing, which should give you a couple skills. Also, dont forget to spend the points on your character sheet (c) to increase magicka, stamina, or health.

Thank you both. So, you have to be using a staff to cast spells? Can't I be a sword and shield wielding fool and still cast spells? Do I have to switch to my second weapon set (once I get it at level 15), which sounds like should be a staff, in order to cast spells?

Is that how it works?

KewaG - yes, you were helpful. I don't know what an ult is, though.

Adampad - also very helpful info. I know how to level up my skills and my character points. I just don't know where my spells are, or how to get more of them.

I'm pretty sure you can use spells with other weapons, you just have to level them up first.

Thanks again. So, last question (for now). If I just equip a staff and use it in combat, I will open up the staff skill line? W

ill this give me more spells as I level up in this staff skill line? Is this the only way to get new spells?

I think so. I don't use spells so it's untested for me.

Then WHERE is the Mage's Guild? That's the better question.
