From what I have seen in-game, most people are running mag DPS nerco. Thou, if you look at the class' kit, looks like it can be a DPS/heals type mage and do fine.
Right now, they're good at everything.. just like the other classes.

For Tanking, the experience is basically drain your opponent to sustain yourself.

For Healing, you actually bring great group utility and can resurrect 3 dead allies instantly with your Ultimate, though it is very expensive. (345? cost)

For Damage, both Stamina and Magicka are doing fairly well, but I hear the Magicka rotation is substantially harder to master (more reaction-based and priority-based rather than a static rotation), annnnd.. I hear Stamina DPS is basically Stamina Warden DPS with new visuals.
Stamcro is the highest DPS class in the game right now for PvE. I saw one hit over 85k dps, and uhhh... that's alot more than the average high end of 60-70k.
Most versatile kit of all the classes, very easy for hybrid builds for any role dps/healer/tank, eg as a dps, you can easily off heal/tank if you want to. Reliance on its 'unique' mechanic slows down magcro dps compared to stamcro. Khajiit with its bonus crit damage hits the hardest.
Necro Health Tanks are also fun to play, with about 100k health.
Best at selling Elseweyr DLC :D
Necro is best suited for stam dps, they're meh when it comes to mag dps and pretty awful when it comes to tanking. Didn't try healer so can't really comment on that.

Stamblades are still the strongest stam class in the game, stamcro is very close behind with 1-2k less dps when fully geared on a trial dummy.

Dual Wield and Bow.

Most classes that rely on 2H in PvE are classes that lack both a good spammable ability and a class Execute.. Stamina Nightblades get both: Surprise Attack, and Killer's Blade.

I have always wanted Wrecking Blow to become a spammable; to be useful. ZOS could easily do this by making Wrecking Blow into a 2H version of Surprise Attack, with it's own quirk of course, like placing a stun when an enemy uses cast-time abilities (or something less possibly OP in pvp).

Considering one of the heals benefits from having Corpses on the ground, i'd say a combo of DPS/Healer would be best for Necro.
