Is the wintermute bear storyline bugged?
In the cave when you are trapped by the bear where you find the room with the spear, the bear is tracking you perfectly and constantly from the second you hit the cave floor. This is completely different from all the rest of the cave and is very strange. This makes it almost impossible to reach the spear and be ready for the bear to attack.
Ive done it maybe twenty times now and all but one time I only got one attempt where I instantly got killed. One of the attempts however I got downed four times before dying. This also seems strange.
Third thing I noticed was even before the cave. After fixing the spear I got a cutscene at the last cave entrance where you taunt the bear for not feeling so well. This felt to me like it should be a cutscene ment for AFTER you have fought the bear. Up until that point I had not.
When the attack did happen at that same tunnel I was not able to go through the tunnel and was wondering why. I spent quite a while running against an invisible wall before the attack happened. It felt like there either was something missing that was supposed to happen or the event simply triggered strangely late.
A lot of weird stuff going on here..

Some of the triggers are a bit bugged. I had an issue where the bear wouldn't follow me into the final cave. But it's not entirely broken and if the bear does follow you it works fine.

Did you hide in the little caves/holes? The bear can't get to there and will eventually wander off. It doesn't wander far though so timing the last push to the spear is pretty frustrating

I did hide in the holes yes. Hiding in the hole in the last cave room if i looked out in one side the bear was coming to that side, if I looked out the other side, the bear was immediately going there. If I stayed in one side the bear was jerking back and forth in the same place. I would get it if you have a quite limited window to get to the spear before him noticing but the fastest i could ever make it was that I barely got the spear in my hand before I got attacked. I would need at least a couple of more seconds to first see which direction the bear is coming from and ready the spear. I had more like a quarter of a second.

What I did is: when you first enter the chamber there's that big hollow central column right in front of you - since the bear always knows where you are there's no sense trying to hide, so lure him around the back side of the central column until he's as far away from the spear as he can be.

Now quickly walk or run to the spear, grab it and either prepare for your first encounter or if he hasn't spotted you yet, go hide in a cubbyhole to regain any stamina you lost during the sprint.

I will try to do that, thanks. Still , I really dont like how that part of the story works. Being trapped boxed up with a janky bear without equipment is not what I signed up for in my open world survival experience. I found a lot of dried intestine and cloth, maybe I can make a rope to hang myself? Better than getting repeatedly mauled by a bear...

And the fact that the mauling cinematic is unskippable?!? :steamfacepalm:

By the 5th time I was being mauled I literally removed my headphones and closed my eyes - who wants to watch their own gruesome death play out over and over and over and over and over?

Also, the cutscene after retrieving the spear but failing the fight is not a bug - that's to give you a way out if the fight is too challenging for you. You emerge with a lot of damage/ripped clothing but at least you have the spear.

Yeah, there should really be a possibility to at least reload at once. Its also very weird how I sometimes can live through getting mauled by the bear several times while other times he get me once and its instant kill. Im playing on the easiest difficulty. If I was playing on hard difficulty I aggree it should only take one attack but on easy? This is the main reason why I chose easy difficulty. To not get stuck on some overpowered bossfight not being able to progress. Thats not fun gameplay for me. I uderstand people that does enjoy it, but opting for easy, I obviously do not:)

I agree - to me the bear fight scenes seem artifical, so different to the spirit of the main game, not to mention near impossible for those of us who are not button-mashing FPS ninjas. And (unless the is something surprising in Episode 3) the mighty bear battle is the Trappers life story and not Mackenzies.

I got to the spear without much difficulty, using the hideholes throughout the cave, but once I grabbed the spear and back to a hidehole, there was no cutscene or journal update. bug? what do i do now, try to find my way out? fight the bear?
Dee2e™ Jan 11, 2019 @ 3:01pm
Ok, so after picking up the spear I dashed to a crevice that is big enough to stand up in, makes it easy to move while planning to attack the bear. I had three skirmishes with him using the spear, and then it broke into a cutscene of me killing the bear, followed by a cutscene where you arrive back at the trappers cabin in rough shape. Not too bad overall, but the journal should at least update to tell you to kill the bear or sneak out of the cave etc.

Yeah the cutscene is unbearably long. Just use Alt+F4 to kill the game and reload the save. I found this also works in sandbox.

I actualy found a way to quite easily win the cavefight. As the bear is entering the cave wait before going down to the floor level from the ledge. If you have cloth on you, make a bandage. That will quickly roll time forward and also give you a healing item should things go sideways. If you don`t have any cloth just wait and make sure the bear have enough time to walk a bit into the tunnel. You wont be able to see it but maybe give it 15-20 seconds after the bear is out of view. You will just have to test it. Just remember the bear will always start coming towards you the second your feet hit the floor.

Get immediately up on yor feet and run / walk fast to the spear. Do not bother sneaking, there is no reason to try to be stealthy. It will most likely get you killed. The bear should be coming slowly from a tunnel on the oposite side of the spear on the right hand side. At least on my difficulty setting, this way you get plenty of time to pick up the spear and get ready. You might get time to use the adrenaline shot (if you found it earlier) before the second attack or it could be good using it as early as before even going for the spear. I wont be doing any testing on it since I never want to do it ever again.

Anyone else got the bear cinematic before going through the tunnel after finding the spear? This was before fighting it but the man seemed very confident he had somehow weakened the bear. Did`nt really make sense to me at the time.
It would have made perfect sense if that cinematic played at the next time before the attack cinematic prior to the cave. But it would have been better if the attack was triggered some time right after the tunnel on your way back to the cabin when you think you are safe. Thats not really a big issue tho.

I could not aggree more Neil. Love the way you put it. Having to fight the bear 3x3 times is a little bit like an old arcade game. It feels out of place in an otherwise masterfully crafted survival game.
I pray there will be no more boss fights like that.

I've managed to sneak by the bear. He doesn't know where you are if you're far enough away from him, and if you hide long enough in a cubby hole/tunnel, he eventually loses interest and walks away. If you plan it right, you have plenty of time to prep for the encounter.
