Did you hide in the little caves/holes? The bear can't get to there and will eventually wander off. It doesn't wander far though so timing the last push to the spear is pretty frustrating
Now quickly walk or run to the spear, grab it and either prepare for your first encounter or if he hasn't spotted you yet, go hide in a cubbyhole to regain any stamina you lost during the sprint.
By the 5th time I was being mauled I literally removed my headphones and closed my eyes - who wants to watch their own gruesome death play out over and over and over and over and over?
Also, the cutscene after retrieving the spear but failing the fight is not a bug - that's to give you a way out if the fight is too challenging for you. You emerge with a lot of damage/ripped clothing but at least you have the spear.
I agree - to me the bear fight scenes seem artifical, so different to the spirit of the main game, not to mention near impossible for those of us who are not button-mashing FPS ninjas. And (unless the is something surprising in Episode 3) the mighty bear battle is the Trappers life story and not Mackenzies.
Get immediately up on yor feet and run / walk fast to the spear. Do not bother sneaking, there is no reason to try to be stealthy. It will most likely get you killed. The bear should be coming slowly from a tunnel on the oposite side of the spear on the right hand side. At least on my difficulty setting, this way you get plenty of time to pick up the spear and get ready. You might get time to use the adrenaline shot (if you found it earlier) before the second attack or it could be good using it as early as before even going for the spear. I wont be doing any testing on it since I never want to do it ever again.
It would have made perfect sense if that cinematic played at the next time before the attack cinematic prior to the cave. But it would have been better if the attack was triggered some time right after the tunnel on your way back to the cabin when you think you are safe. Thats not really a big issue tho.

I could not aggree more Neil. Love the way you put it. Having to fight the bear 3x3 times is a little bit like an old arcade game. It feels out of place in an otherwise masterfully crafted survival game.
I pray there will be no more boss fights like that.
