They are killable, they take extra recources yes, but no need to restart, unless you're on hard then you probably should.
I found them hard to kill because they are so fast. I have no shotgun left.
Seems likee you have to be lucky to kill each one with the pistol. How many bullets does it take to kill one?
- Don't kill every zombie, only those in pathways you backtrack through frequently. Run around them if you can. This is to conserve ammo (even though you get plenty anyways).
- Burn bodies only in those corridors/rooms mentioned in the previous point. And yes, the game tells you to burn bodies in the first saferoom (aka when you get access to the first oil canteen).
- If there are multiple zombies in the same room, try to kill them so their bodies stack. You can burn more than one body at once, and the amount of oil in the game is limited.
- Zombies don't turn crimson if you score a headshot or kneecap shot.
a) with handgun - aim straight ahead, headshot chance is set. When they get close, aim down at the knees. It's rare for the kneecap shot to occur but it does happen, and it saves you the hassle/resources of burning.
b) with shotgun - aim upwards and fire right before they're in grab range. The headshot chance is not 100%, so if it fails, you're likely getting grabbed.
c) with magnum - guaranteed headshot
That should be enough to get you through the game. Unless, as other posters have mentioned, you're playing on Hard, there is no need to restart. Just practice your dodge skills or, as you can do to avoid most things in the game, just RUN. You'll recover your resources very quickly if you play it smart. Good luck!!
And nope, you didn't break the game. This is just the game's way of punishing the player, haha.
It does tell you to burn the bodies.

Happy to help, although I'm a little sad the crimson head surprise is spoiled for you, haha. Good luck, it's one of my favorite games of all time :)
PS. Don't pick up every item on impulse. It can lead to ugly situations early on :)
I was gonna post that is a very nice set of info.....for a second run.
As someone who played the original one a few times back then and a few since, I'm very acustomed to dead zombies staying dead. the first crimson stood up as i was walking past and it gave me chest pains lol.
