Firstly, there's nothing here indicating you're stupid. Welcome to the franchise.
RE0 is a very interesting addition to the original story that explains events from both RE1 and RE2 in a creative way. Revelations 1+2 are merely spin-offs that are rather additional stories to RE5+6 that also explains particular unexplained events from their separate stories.
I suggest starting with the original chronological order with RE0 and RE1 before moving into the other installments. Things became more convoluted overtime and believe me you'll be less confused and horrified with the beginning trilogy.
RE0 is vastly different than Revelations and the other installments in the second trilogy in various ways. It's a lot to explain but the best way to tell you is that the pacing is slower, there's more puzzles, you can control two characters, and you have limited resources.
It's a rather challenging experience.
I'd say give RE0 a chance if you've already played Revelations.
If you could, snag a bundle of RE0 and RE1 together to get the full experience.
RER1 is a mixture of the post-RE3 console shooter Resident Evils that started with RE4, and the classic ones. To be more exact, it is a strange cross between RE5 and RE1. I am also biased because it is my favourite RE game, as I love how perfectly it combines old non-linear levels, limited resources, large enemy variety, and modern controls with very keyboard-friendly mechanics. (Plus it has a terrific side game mode, a looter game.)
0 was the least impressive to me out of the main series (1-6) and the only one that I completed only once. Revelations is great and has a really good co-op enabled mode called Raid Mode where you progress your character as you get further in the levels and difficulty with diablo style loot; weapons and weapon mods. It's worth it just for Raid mode alone really but you need to complete the story to unlock the levels for it.
