I watched them each just once because of the RE namesake, but I was not impressed by them. The only good part is the bio monsters actually do look like they're from RE (lickers, Nemesis).
The story is just loosely based off the game, and so are the characters. They share the same name and maybe the same outfit, but that's it. Personalities are completely different.
The first movie is the least worst, because it dosen't feature any characters from the games.
I know this is not 100% correct, but its something like that
The live action films, directed by Paul "Who the ♥♥♥♥ needs a script" Anderson are complete garbage as RE movies, and as movies overall. They can't even be consistent between themselves. The first one was somehow decent though.
The CGI movies are basically just some fan-service thrown there with some half-assed plot to promote certain games. Those are actually canon and coexist with the videogames universe. The first two, RE Degeneration and RE Damnation, are pretty much average, probably not bad if you take them more as OVAs than actual films. The last one "Vendetta" is basically just action nonsense and dancing with zombies with a terrible excuse of a plot, similar to what Anderson did with the live action series.
Resident Evil the game, is survival horror, not a shooter :) I totally agree with you. But i prefer the zombiepart, before hunters arrive. I really think hunters are RNG. The only places i die in the game, is by hunters snipe (when i cant get past them fast enough) and Lisa battle
Not being true to the games is the lesser of the problems with Anderson's films. The script of those movies is plain garbage that any preschooler could easily write something better, acting is below average, the main character is an indestructible Mary Sue and everyone else is just filler. And there's no consistency between one movie and the next, some characters just dissapear without any explanation, and there has been a lot of retcons and things that doesn't make any sense (that's what their own fans say, I stopped watching them after the third one). And they're not even good action movies since they abuse so much of the slow-motion and other "cool" effects that it quickly stops being funny.
The reason they became a success is the same reason why those sh*tty mediatic TV shows have oftentimes a surprisingly big audience. People enjoy watching and eating crap, though they're at least fully aware it's crap. Not everyone of course but the majority probably does.
