"The power of the Ancients is now yours to command. You have crushed all opposition beneath your heel. You rule the greatest empire in living history- its soldiers' bravery at your command, your army is undefeatable. Your fleets patrol the skies of every planet in the galaxy... this galaxy. *chuckles* But other challenges await... the Master of Orion!"

The first two games of the series are indeed among the first, and also considered among the greatest, of the Space 4X genre (mainly only preceded by Reach for the Stars, I think). They are available off of GoG as a single item for both games at a very cheap price. The second game I feel has aged very well, though it of course doesn't include a number of more modern UI elements that make life easier (such as the ability to use a scroll wheel on windows and screens with a scroll bar)..

Even if they weren't the first Space 4X, they pretty much defined the genre from that point onwards. In fact, the genre name of 4X was created by a journalist specifically to describe Master of Orion.

Here is what is listed in the Wikipedia article for Master of Orion on the press reception, mentioning the origin of the genre name:
Emrich in a Computer Gaming World preview described the game as "the best that galactic conquest can offer", and summarized its type of gameplay as "4X", meaning "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate". He and later commentators noted earlier examples of this genre, including Civilization (1991) and Reach for the Stars (1983). In retrospective reviews, Allgame, GameSpot and IGN regarded MoO as the standard by which turn based strategy games set in space are judged, although Allgame regretted the lack of a multiplayer option.

In 1996, Computer Gaming World ranked it as the 33rd best game of all time. In 2003, IGN ranked it as the 98th top game. Master of Orion is a member of both GameSpy's Hall of Fame (2001) and GameSpot's list of the greatest games of all time.

I played Master of Orion 2 quite a bit and loved it.

Master of Orion is by far one of my favorite games of all time and the new one coming out is one of my most anticipated games.

It really scratches that itch of economy... warring and my favorite.. research strats. I am REALLY looking forward to this release.

stardocks galatic civlization games are closes thing you fine to it but there alot of differinces in them frist being research MOO always had way way way more research then Galatic civ series.

the secound differince was races there was research i belive if i remember right in MOO that allowed you to change stats for your race.

My brain is hurting from the poor writing ability, but I'll comment on what I've been able to decipher from these hieroglyphics. Galactic Civilizations is not really as close as you say, to be honest. StarDrive, as I understand, are the games you want to look at for MOO clones (specifically StarDrive 2, since, as I understand, support for StarDrive 1 completely dropped before all the bugs got ironed out). If you are thinking about how Galactic Civilizations has a ship design feature, it's not really that great for actual ship capability design- it's only value is making ships that look neat- otherwise, you just attach components that increase basic values of the ship like attack, defense, sensors, engines, and fuel range. This is partly because of the fact the combat is essentially auto-resolve with an observer function- they just do simple stat-to-stat comparisons for battles so ballistic attack is deducted by ballistic defense, or energy attack is deducted by energy defense...

And yes, there was a research application for one of the Biology projects that allowed you to 're-specialize' your race with extra 'racial picks' (40% more- that is, 4 more on top of the 10 default). This could be used to either add bonuses to your race or remove penalties that previously existed. This, in addition to using custom races from the race screen, allowed for amazing customizability of racial optimization. Numerous builds for Master of Orion 2 races exist out there explicitly to be used with the Custom Race feature and that research application, which is called Evolutionary Mutation, by the way.

We can't exactly know how that is until this remake is released. However, we might be able to tell you what the earlier games of the series were like, though I'm not sure how I'd quantify ease of learning and use of the UI. In Master of Orion 2, you can right-click nearly everything in the game to explain a given UI element, at least. Some elements might not have an immediately obvious function just by looking at them, so the right-click will make that clear, and likely explain how to use it. Again, this is something in Master of Orion 2 by Simtex and Microprose from 1996, and not from Master of Orion by Wargaming currently in development with a TBA release date.

Moo where the best back in the day not now, now there are plenty of x4 games that beat this ancient game.
Master of Orion 2 aged fairly well- hell, one of the modern 4X games (and, yes, it IS 4X, because it is supposed to be four Xes, eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate, as already pointed out here) copies Master of Orion 2 almost perfectly- StarDrive and StarDrive 2. The only reason those games don't have amazing reviews is the developers released the games in buggy states- in the case of the first game, it never got much better, according to the user reviews on Steam, but the second game is reportedly getting serious attention from the developer to fix all the problems. All things told, I see a lot of praise for the game itself, but ratings are heavily hampered by the buggy state of the game. At least some of the negative reviews I saw had the user express desire to play MOO2 to at least avoid the bugs.
