In reality it basically never happens anyway. A colonist needs to have a pain stopper and be extremely "lucky" to suffer no fatal damage after that much damage. If you play the game normally you will probably never see it and wouldn't even know the mechanic existed if somebody didn't tell you. In my 2000+ hours of playing I don't think I've ever had a colonist die from total hit point loss, I've only been able to pull it off using dev mode to specifically target bodyparts with just enough damage to not destroy them or kill the pawn. I should have mentioned that above too, a destroyed limb does not count as missing hit points, there is no damage there anymore, the limit only looks at active damage.
Though that's probably in the pain&shock territory so with painless pawns, dunno.
Have there been a study on people who don't feel pain and what makes them unalive?
Do enemy mechanoids like centepedes have some kind of treshhold as well ?
