It can be a bit technical and overwhelming so don't be afraid to look up a clothing guide video. I'm sure there's plenty that can better explain what everything does than we can here.
If you have a bunch of mods that add clothing and materials, it's even more tedious.
with outfit managment (as the pre-answers suggested no tainted clothes, also the quality filters poor to legendary, 0 to 100% etc) you can pretty much define what to wear
-> and there is a supportive mod that lets you even select the material:

it's not perfect and a bit finicky, but you can manage winterclothes, summerclothes - my pawns wear only devilstrand shadecones during a heatwave and I let them change to sheepwool dusters and stuff, when it's cold.
they even can change worn out clothes by themselfes into newly ones. a bit tricky, but there are a few options with outfit management, you find that in the "assign" tab under "current outfit" - just in case you missed that ;-)
with mods you can go even further and let a proper taylor mend worn outfits:

hope this helps a bit;
no pun intended, ever
