I had a trade caravan steal food from me
I'm using both the hospitality mod and rim fridge, if either of those might help, but they walked into my colonists dining area, and grabbed the carnivore lavish meals that were sitting in my fridge. I do have guests may buy thing enabled, but they didn't buy them, they just grabbed. Can anyone help?

My last colony had a tough winter, but the day was saved with a passing trader! Or so I thought. I purchased all the pemmican and anything else edible. Immediately after dropping the goods, all traders filled their inventories with the food, and they and their animals pigged out on the stuff left on the ground. I just about had a stroke.
I got the last laugh though. A pair of hungry tyrannosaurs got them. Yutyrannus, I think?

It happens sometimes when they spawn without any food on them. In my current run I had some Moyo merchants run through one end of my base to grab meals from my freezer and dine in my dining room before exiting the other end on their way off the map.

Unless I'm in dire straits on food I generally find it just a minor irritation, though if I'm bothered enough I use the Locks mod to seal off the freezer.

Lock 'em in, freeze 'em to death, and take the food they ate back with interest in the form of eating THEM. :steamhappy:

They should've known better than to steal from cannibals, especially when you're stealing meat

hospitality lets you set allowed areas and allowed shopping areas.

Be sure to set both up. Obviously, you'd not want to allow them to shop in areas containing things you don't want to sell....but I'd suggest going a step farther so you don't deal with bugs like you just saw, and not even allow them into that area.

Did the offending guests have a mental break btw? food binge will ignore all restrictions and just eat whatever and go wherever.

Mrf, Hospitality always felt like more trouble than it was worth to me.

they weren't my guests, they were a trade caravan and they weren't in the shopping area. no, none of them had a mental break

Have you got an outdoor dining area with table and chairs? I found that once I made one of those, visitors/traders hang out over there and don't go into my pantry unless they're starving.

it was in a building, both the fridge and the table

I build a self contained trading room, with tables and chairs - well away from my freezer! I've had the same issue, and this mod keeps the caravans out of my base areas. Plus they drag filth in etc :/

edit: Oh, and temperature control... caravans will leave if it is too cold, but if they're inside in a nice warm room = profits. 8)

Trading caravans are guests.
Anyone who visits you and are not hostile are considered guests.
Be hospitable.

In the base game that normally should not happen. NPCs in trade caravans always spawn with enough food to keep them fed while on your map for the typical duration they should be. If they are somehow delayed long enough to run out of food, then they will go after any meals they can find, but this is generally not something that "accidentally" happens and is more an anti-exploit mechanic to prevent starvation abuse.

What usually causes this, are NPCs created by mods that don't have enough food assigned to their pawn generation. Things like modded factions generally, though I'm sure hospitality also messes with that to some extent to handle NPC inventories and allowing them to buy things.

What can also cause it, is selling prisoners to a caravan, since those prisoners probably aren't going to have any meals on them and if they hang around long enough they will have to run back into your base and grab something to eat.

unless you disabled it in the mod options (which gives you bonus happiness depending on the quality of the meal instead), guest pawns never steal food, they pay market price for it in silver and will only take food they can afford. (this happens automatically, and isn't part of the selling zone system, though you can use both. Putting a bunch of cheap meals available for free for bonus rep, while putting some fine/lavish meals in a selling zone for the pawns that can afford them, since they'll try to get the best meal they can afford).

If you don't want them getting into your food, you'll need to make sure and set guest zones so they can't access the food storage, or can only access a certain part of it where you keep a stock-pile for guests.
