Now on to the piracy, I must admit when i first discovered rimworld i pirated the game for a whole of 2 hours. At which point i bought the game from the rimworld website and then shortly after i bought another copy as a gift. Though Tynan may not approve of the piracy the simple fact is that piracy brings in sales. You dont lose sales with pirates as the vast majority were not going to buy the game in the first place. You do however stand to gain sales from those who enjoy the game.
I've said it for years: Piracy only ever hurts games/movies/shows that aren't any good.

Developers spend too much time and energy worrying about "lost sales" from piracy. You can't learn anything significant from looking at the number of illegal downloads. You have no idea how many of those illegal downloads would have otherwise been a sale, and you can't see how many of those illegal downloads led to one or more legal purchases.

I think the trick is to never openly condone piracy, but never actually do anything to prevent it. Pirates should feel bad enough to buy the game if/when they have the money. But companies should never punish fans for wanting to play their game. Even a fan who never buys your game is still a walking advertisement for it.

Valve did a really good job with steam, everyone I know refuses to buy games anywhere but on steam. Yet with steam you never truly own the game. It's steam "renting" it to you. They could, if they wanted, close your account with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ excuse and force you to buy everything again.

So I really don't understand the obsession with steam.

i dont see whats unusual about wanting all your games in one or a few places . I personally like having games on steam but also use sites like origin or a blizzard game or mail order boxed copies.

My main reason is i dont want to use a credit card on loads of diffferent sites , especially a site i will use once. I would have got the game awhile ago if it was on a site i already used my CC on or if i could mail order the game from a place i use . So i will wait till its on steam.

buy it from the rimworld website, open steam, "add non-steam" game. Besides, buying it on steam syphons some of the funding from Tynan. It's not like Ludeon is a big company at all. For big AAA companies, it doesn't really matter, but for games made by a single person, every dollar helps them keep developing or at least not worry about where the next meal will come from.

Sorry but I don't buy games outside steam, especially if they won't give me a steam key when they do go on steam.I've been waiting for years to give you my money, and I'll do it as soon as you let me.

@Donolan, Tynan can't promise Steam keys to everyone before the game is released. Valve has been cracking down on developers who do that to get more votes on Greenlight.

Once RimWorld is released on Steam, that restriction no longer applies.

Whhhhhh

It's perfectly fine to tell your BUYERS that they get "free" Steam keys (after already having bought the game from you). It's not fine to give VOTERS free Steam keys for voting on greenlight. The distinction honestly is not that hard to grasp.

Valve’s rule isn’t against giving keys to people after the game is out. It is against selling keys before the game is available on Steam.

I am also able to generate all the keys I like. But, as I’ve been specifically told by Valve, I’m not allowed to sell those keys right now. That’s why I don’t promise keys.

So, to summarize. Later, I’ll be allowed to give keys to everyone. But now, I’m just not allowed to sell those keys, until the Steam release. Note the subtle but important difference.
