Thanks, love this game

Don't get me wrong, I prefer DRM free, but if Rimworld utilizes Workshop there is no parity between the two versions. In my experience, once modders start uploading to Workshop many, if not most, stop uploading elsewhere. Needless to say this is more than a minor inconvenience.
I suppose it's my own stupidity for not doing my research. I let my guard down and assumed a Steam key was implicit with the purchase when available...guess I was wrong. Really, really disappointed.
Disappointed with what? Tynan has stated you'll be able to get a key from the studio's website.
According to the FAQ [TG] Maligner linked, Steam keys are not guaranteed for recent purchases.
I think it just takes reading between the lines of some other comments. He can generate as many keys as he wants. What he can't do is "promise" keys before it is on sale on Steam. So right now he is not "promising"
We don't know that for sure. Take Skyrim for example. Hell of a lot more mods on Nexus than Workshop. There's even many mods out on Nexus now for Rimworld.
So really some clarity in a central location would be great and allay a lot of fear and growing panic, because as good as Rimworld is I don't think anyone is prepared to pay $60 to buy it twice.
Due to Steam policy he isn't allowed to promise keys for the ones who bought it after it has gone to Greenlight
That's basically what the FAQ says. But then Tynan has clarified right above (and elsewhere) that eventually there will be a way to request a Steam key if you have the webpage version, regardless of purchase date. And enough reading here and on his blog gives you the sense everyone who bought the game and wants a Steam key will get one (eventually).
The original key limitation is really just while Rimworld is in early access.
Regardless you can see the confusion, and I hope Tynan can as well and just puts a sticky to clear up any panic.

Valve’s rule isn’t against giving keys to people after the game is out. It is against selling keys before the game is available on Steam.
I am also able to generate all the keys I like. But, as I’ve been specifically told by Valve, I’m not allowed to sell those keys right now. That’s why I don’t promise keys.
So, to summarize. Later, I’ll be allowed to give keys to everyone. But now, I’m just not allowed to sell those keys, until the Steam release. Note the subtle but important difference.
After Steam release you'll get your key either way.
Muchas gracias!
