All newborn children are named Baby?
all 3 of the children I've had so far are all named Baby and just have nicknames for their real names, eventually am I able to rename them? They're 6, 6, and 1

You should have gotten a pop up that allowed you to name them.

I must have accidentally skipped that each time :p4g_sweat: I just made a quick test run and you're right there is a pop up

Wierd. I thought they would get their names. I remember a popup, didn't realize it was a naming popup

And digging into the info and dev mode? I now have colonists with name of baby and no way to change without going into the save files and editing them directly. Disappointing. And very frustrating now too.

Okay. So it isn't too hard to change, even if you are not programming savvy. Just tried on my save. Fortunately it is very easy.

In main menu, in the options you can select to 'open save game folder'

Look for <your colony name>.rws file.

You need to open it in a more advanced text editing program. Notepad++ is the free program I use.

hit ctrl+f once open to bring up the search menu. Search for:

<First>Baby</first>

You will need to know the last names to help identify easily as last name will be right underneath. If you have two 'baby' with same colonist, then there will be something if you are okay at reading code for age, else probably the first one in the search.

Just replace the 'baby' in the above code line with the name you want, and then save. Load it up and all works.

Now, there might be unforeseen side effects I do not know. Most likely history logs will not change. But any interactions with the code should be looking for that pawn's ID and not the name.

Okay, this has given me an idea for playing around with surnames. I'm going to have a full colony of Baby Santa, Baby Boy, Baby Imsorry, maybe even a Baby Baby.

You can also just subscribe to Character Editor which gives you a modded cryptosleep casket that you can toss your baby into and it will allow you to change anything about the pawn including its name.

Yeah, but mods can clutter up the game. I guess could add it then delete it right after, but then also perhaps need to actually build it, etc?

I run some tests around the babies, and all had names without one called baby. But like already said, you can easily change the name during the first day.
I was surprised in my tests runs that most time they got a name fitting to the parents. First Mother was named Kiriku and Baby has also a fitting name with similar origne, Second was called Naja, and a boy Willis after his father, all by the game.

Pretty sure that mod also allows you to just open said mod's UI and change everything about a pawn there. With no building required.

Adding a mod and removing it mid-save actually messes up more than just keeping it, since removing a mod does not remove references to it in the saved game. While character editor might be safe to remove mid-save, other more complex mods often aren't and leave you with a gray screen when the mod is removed.
