world map
so my "world" only covers around a quarter of the globe. is there any way to get to unlock the rest of the world or is it really that small?

The default setting is 30% which is way more than you will ever need in most cases, it's the only one I ever use personally. There is no way AFAIK to change the size of the world after creating your game.

If you want to have full globe coverage without the drawbacks on performance or travel logistics, try this mod.

Try to set up a big trading caravan going through multiple settlements. The world and it's layout will suddenly feel much more expansive lmao

You can’t change the size after game creation, although on new runs you can set it to whatever you want.

Unless you have a specific need for a 100% world, like an epic nomadic journey or to increase the chance of finding a very specific starting tile, there’s no need for a larger world. I trade and caravan a lot but I rarely go beyond 70-100 tiles from my colony tile.

My understanding is that more coverage (a larger world) is bad for performance. I’ve done 100% runs and not seen a big difference, but I’m not sure.

I always go for 100% coverage, simply because I find 30% coverage breaks MAH IMMURSUN, and I've noticed no performance issues apart from the fact that generating the world, both initially and whenever you open the world map the first time after loading your save, takes significantly longer (up to a minute to generate initially, and up to 30 seconds to open the map).

That's not necessarily a normally recommended choice. IIRC, there have been some changes to help make large world generation yield a more stable, manageable, game. BUT, I don't ever do that and usually stick with the default setting. As a result, I've never had any risk of performance issues. One does not want to discover one has made a mistake in generating a huge world after devoting a lot of hours to that playthrough...

YMMV, though. Enjoy! :)

I'm not saying that it's "necessarily a normally recommended choice". If you read my post you'll find that I only stated that I always do it personally and that I haven't suffered any performance loss whatsoever apart from 1) generating the world for the first time, and 2) opening the world map for the first time after loading a save. While your mileage may vary, this is my mileage over ~2000 hours of playing.

That's great and I'm happy for you! I just didn't want the possible issue to go unaddressed so some new player visiting the thread didn't run off and start every game at 100% Generation and then wonder why they're suddenly not as cool as you. :)
