Hauling Multiple Types of Goods at Once
Please please please let me pick up two things at once. I have to walk across the map 5 times every time I want to strip a body and collect the goods. Or let me pick up both some berries and some ambrosia in one trip. Or when I go to collect herbal medicine, I pick up one, then come back, then go back for the other medicine that was 11 squares away. If I can carry it when I am in a convoy, I should be able to pick it up to bring it to the stockpile. This would be the biggest quality of life improvement I can think of. It is brutal without the pick up and haul mod.

You can get around it by building a temporary stock pile and creating then disbanding a convoy, but this is a lot of work to do over and over and should not be necessary, and it feels dirty.

I beg you to add this feature.

You don't need to to create a stockpile. Form a temporary caravan, tell them to carry nothing or leave it on default (it doesn't matter), then right click on stuff laying around and tell them to load it, once you pick up everything you want, cancel the caravan.

It should feel dirty though, it's not how hauling was balanced to work. The amount of time it takes to haul a bunch of small things one by one is what the game and colonist movement speed and such is all balanced around. The dev once mentioned he could make hauling more efficient, but to maintain the balance he would have to slow down colonist movement speed so things take the same amount of effort, to maintain the balance he wants.

I expect at some point he will figure out a way to counter the temp caravan exploit, so I wouldn't get used to it.

This is the mod you want though:

Seems like this mod does what you want, but I haven't personally tested it.

Pick Up And Haul is an excellent mod that solves your problems. I do not play without it.

It's a bit mind boggling that the haul system is still the way it is. Making temporary stockpiles out in the open to amass scattered supplies is a really joyless picky process. It's flawed as well because setting the temp zone to high priority for only food will make any haulers near your base bring food from your farms/storage out to the zone if you aren't watching & multitasking enough. Also magically gaining a usable inventory the second a pawn joins a caravan feels exploitative, especially if you've no intention to actually leave the map.

IMO the game is often borderline painful to play without the Pick up and Haul mod. The issue is less the time it takes for default hauling behaviour to complete tasks (bringing 1 item at a time) and is more about the huge amount of clicks needed when the player wants to force them to do it more efficiently. Hopefully something like what this mod provides will be added to the game eventually :/

Yeah I wouldn’t play without pick up and haul. I only think this about a couple of mods, but the base game needs its functionality or something very similar. I’ve played with and without pickup up and haul and there’s absolutely nothing better about the game without out. The game is more “challenging,” but there are far better challenges than “Which one of these things am I gonna let rot in the field because I can’t haul them both?” (even though I can carry a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ elephant)

Just to give an opposing opinion here, I never use Pick up and Haul and I avoid the caravan trick. I'm perfectly happy with the vanilla hauling system and the only thing I use to adjust it is the Allow Tool's "haul urgently" system so I don't have to manually assign hauling tasks for things that need to be hauled in right away. Colonists only haul one stack/thing at a time which is easy to work with by just adding more haulers. That's sort of the balance there, instead of being able to use a single hauler to loot a bunch of downed pawns at the edge of your base in one trip, you have a reason for having 4-5 colonists dedicated to hauling to get things done quickly. If I didn't have that much hauling to do my colonists would be idle all the time anyway.

Okay, now haul the bodies and their weapons from one side of the map to wherever you dispose of them, and maybe if you want to strip them.
Now you've got a massive hauling issue. Because every item, no matter the size, is the same. A lowly 1 smokeleaf that he had on him ? That's the same as an entire stack of blocks.

That's why it doesn't work. Loots, if there's variety, drastically increase time spent going back and forth. If you don't want it to take days, you need multiple haulers. But in that meantime nobody is doing anything. So its a massive setback on an entire day even though you've won a raid. Its backward beyond reason.

That's why you don't haul everything all the time. If your colonists are busy maybe you look at drops at the edge of the map and decide to leave them there. Walking across the map for one smokeleaf joint or to haul a corpse you are just going to dispose anyway isn't worthwhile unless your haulers have nothing better to do. This is also part of the balance, you have a choice to make, instead of being able to just haul everything every time because a single pawn can pack it all away.

The hauling mod is mandatory if you do not plan on forming caravans after every raid. I assume the only reason it hasn't been incorporated into the main game is so people can post about how hardcore they are for letting things deteriorate on the edge of their map.

I feel like they need to strike a balance between the Pick up and Haul mod and the vanilla game. Pick up and Haul can feel a little OP when you carry 500 rice, but vanilla seems crazy when you can only pick up one beer or one joint. I know from personal experience that it is quite easy to hold both at once. Maybe they could make it so you can only hold one stack equivalent or something, or maybe 5 things if they are all small or all pieces of clothing or all food or something. They made it so you can hold medicine now, which is great when hauling all the herbal medicine you just foraged, but it could definitely be improved IMO. Still causes issues when you are using a quest pawn that does not want to give you your stuff back.

Sadness comes from the fact that Pick up and Haul does not work with 1.3 yet. Won't let me haul certain goods at all.
