A small problem with combat extended
I am new to CE so I don't know if this is a bug or intended behavior but when a colonist runs out of ammo they will un equip their weapon, then later get more ammo, reload the weapon in the inventory, but not re equip it, leaving them unarmed. It's tedious to equip them over and over manually. I tried some mods to make pawns equips weapons, but this just resulted in a loop of equiping and unequiping when they were out of ammo and an enemy was in range. I did some testing without other mods and am sure this is caused by CE itself, and i dont seem to get any errors in the log. Does anyone know a workaround for this other than disabling ammo? Is this a bug and i should just wait for a fix or is it normal and i just have to live with it?

i'd recommend using simple sidearms, it make it much less tedious when pawns don't re equip their guns, IF they don't auto equip them because SS handles it pretty well with preferred weapons

It's one of the mods i tried. It seems like pretty much any mod that causes colonists to equip on their own either doesnt work at all or causes a loop where they get stuck. What happens is this, Colonist runs out of ammo so CE unequips their weapon, then Simple Sidearms detects an enemy in range of the weapon causing the colonist to re equip it but with no ammo, CE just unequips again, and it repeats. Setting colonists to "Flee" or "Ignore" for enemy reaction also fixes it but then they are basically still unarmed unless i am micro managing it.

you need to make a load out from CE or yes it will break make one for every colonist, or make one and give it to every colonist

Then there must be some other mod issue, but I use CE with SS, and have no issues. Are you using the latest version of CE? There are several.

I tested it with only harmony core and royalty on, and still got the problem of pawns not re equiping after getting more ammo. Then tested it again with only sidearms added and got the equip loops. no combinations of settings for the mods i tried solved either problem. I am using whatever version of the mod the workshop is updated to, i never do any manual updates or anything like that

That is the one i'm using yes. I also double checked to make sure i was using the latest Simple Sidearms and i've tried changing load orders to see if it makes a difference and get the same behaviors.

This is not an error, it's by design. Pawns will put away their current weapon once it is no longer combat viable and switch to another weapon like a melee weapon or another gun. Since you don't give side arm to your pawn, they will be armless. The only way to solve this problem is to give your pawns enough ammo to last a battle. Usually you want enough for 5-6 reload for typical firearm.

Because of the mods+scenario im using they essentially can't carry enough ammo as it would be to much bulk. I have tried giving them a melee weapon sidearm in hopes they switch to that and move on when they run out of ammo, but they still switch back to their ranged weapon over and over and over and get stuck. Giving them another ranged weapon wouldn't solve the problem as they'd just run out of ammo for that one too and get stuck in the same loop. The issue, for me at least, comes not from Sidearms switching the weapons, but that CE doesn't re equip a weapon when its reloaded in the inventory after picking up a new ammo supply.

are you using sidearm? don't both, CE has a built in sidearm function for you and they switch automatically. As for bulk problem, back bag and combat vest should provide plenty of bulk for ammunition. I hope you didn't somehow mod them out of the game.

The problem there is that my setup causes any practical amount of ammo to run out eventually, because of constant threats outside my base. Typically, if they have ammo they will shoot any nearby enemies, then move on with their job like building or growing or whatever. When they run completely out of ammo they end up weaponless unless i manually equip them. It causes me to spend a lot of time messing with colonists gear. My colony isnt that large yet and i'd really like to avoid having to do this constantly when i'm at like 100+ colonists

are you playing with zombieland? I couldn't think of another mods that make you shoot all the time to make this a problem.

i have zombieland and get raids every hour along with manhunter packs every few hours. It makes production and expansion difficult but it is pretty fun
