The prepare carefully mod allows you to design your starting characters.
The character editor mod allows you to change pawn attributes on the fly.
A word of caution since you said you just got the game: having all positive traits tends to be boring. “Getting things done” isn’t that hard when every pawn is great. Enjoying the chaos that ensues when things spiral out of control and triumphing in the face of (often self-inflicted) tragedy is the heart of the game.
or just, if you really have no patience and want to have everything immediately the character editor. This is like a subsequent Prepare Carefully mod that works in the running game. BUT... with the character editor you take out all the tension. To try out and test different character values but really good. And nobody demands that you only enter the best values with the editor. You can also use negative stuff to make a game more difficult.
OP, this is the mod "Prepare Carefully," mentioned above. It's very nearly the most universally acclaimed "help me get the pawns I want to start playing with" mod there is and has been around just slightly less longer than dirt.

Enjoy!
There are a couple of ways to use it. You can add/remove points, traits, skills, etc, however you wish and you can add/remove starting supplies and the like as freely as you wish. OR, you can set yourself up with a "Points" system as a bit of a challenge.
It's a great mod. I use it to edit one, maybe two, starting colonists and will remove deeply undesirable traits, like having two "Envious" pawns at the same time, fairly often. (I don't go too overboard with it and you shouldn't, either, as having low-skill problematic pawns to start with is part of the fun. :) )
It's a great mod.
A note on mods: The above version is the version for the latest 1.2 version of Rimworld. Because Rimworld can be played under a variety of versions (Using the opt-in patch system in the Beta tab) you'll find that not all mods are necessarily compatible with every version. Pay attention to that and be sure to read any mod's description page while paying special attention to its version compatibility and whether or not it requires any dependencies or compatibility patches for other mods. If you're running the DLC, you may need to check to see if there is a special version needed for mods to work with the "Royalty DLC."
I'd also recommend Fluffy's Mod Manager. It really does help you keep everything organized much better than the vanilla launcher system:

this mod on the other hand allows for the same ingame as well.
should go without saying that the editor mod requires some self control when using.
personally i prefer editor over PC as it allows me to bugfix some things quicker than just relying on devmode. also it lets me change hair on the fly in case i think it fits the narrative like 'Malori lost her eye due to the raider. She decided to cover it with her hair.'
PC is more powerful in the setup stage as it also features balancing via points.
I might mess around with super soldier runs or whatnot someday, and I might just go with a punch of potato sacks and see how long it takes for me to die, but for now, I'm enjoying this. Thanks for all the suggestions folks :D
It's just a tool, you can do whatever you want with it, including just not cheating.
It's much better than Prepare Carefully, as it's actually supported by the mod dev and includes compatibility with various other mods including various alien races and such. PC was mostly abandoned a long time ago.
The great thing about character editor is you can change hairstyles, body types, clothing colors, names, etc. I’ve used it to change backgrounds sometimes as well because you can change a theme-clashing background and then change the stats back to the original. When I have a large colony I like to color code everyone as well. If you’re just upping stats you might as well be running god mode on base-builder.

Pre start or mid game editing, use the first for the setup though
