must have base game mods?
I haven't played in a long time and only have the base game. Is there must have mods? Like do I still need the mod that adjust room size value or has that been addressed in an update?

there are a number of threads related to this exact question i recommend looking up old threads! basically all of fluffys mods, miles revived mods. vanilla expanded mods. Rimworld of magic cause its my favorite. Any racial mods you want and none of the ones you don't. Any and all animal mods cause more diversity minus like dragons and dinos and dangerous variants until your ready for that added challenge. good luck

jecs tools unofficial, hugslib, giddy-up mods, other needed frameworks like misc if you want robots

No, there are not.

There are a few QoL (Quality of Life) mods I consider "essential" but none really are.

Of those, I heartily recommend EdB Prepare Carefully and Fluffy's Mod Manager.

Fluffy's Mod Manager approaches "essential"; it allows backing up and saving mods to local storage, rather than the Workshop default, preventing unwanted updates and other problems.

if you want to play modded a alternative modloader is a must have. the sooner you being using one the better when going modded. MM that bozo already posted is good. its easy to use allows for multiple modlists and local backups of your mods. for larger modpacks i would personally recommend rimpy instead just for the fact that its a program on its own and reduces loadtime a lot when tinkerin with modpacks simply by not having to start the game to change mods. Additionally its easier to use if modpacks go totally bonkers.

as for ingame mods its best to play vanilla for a bit and pay attention to what are the shortcomings of the game in your opinion.

Must have mods are entirely a matter of taste. You may want to look at the most subscribed mods in the workshop to get a general idea of what many consider essential.

So far I have prepare carefully, wall mounted lights, and realistic room size.

You really ought to get a mod manager soon.
