-Roll a psychopathic cannibal
-Use Randy Random
-Hope he sends you some building materials quick
-Murder your first visitor for weapon, clothing, and food
-Get smelting ASAP

Going cannibal and building a room on top of a geyser are the only ways I've seen it done.

No geyser on sea ice, I don't know if its possible without extreme random chance like dande said.

I like to do sea ice sometimes with rich noble, but I drop in just enough supplies to build the first house and power.

Sea Ice for the first few days is entirely random luck to survive on naked brutality. Without the ability to spawn in with a synththread parka like you can on other starts, you need to get a raider immediately to steal their clothes to avoid hypothermia. After that, unavoidably, you will be running with mood penalties: slept in the cold, ravenously hungry, etc, putting you at a constant risk for a mental break. All it takes is a couple of dazed wanders in a row to end your run, or a single critical mental break like 'Gave up.'

After that it's just like playing any other run but slower. Without animals, dirt, or hills/mountains you can't really progress without events coming to you, so a lot of it is the waiting game.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it, but if you die to bad luck that's also just part of the difficulty of Sea Ice.

Edit: One thing to note, don't be afraid of starvation. You can survive a ridiculously long time before hunger kills you. The only real threat hunger brings is mental break risk. Otherwise you'll survive between raids without any issue.

IMO the biggest problem with sea ice is that once you 'solve' the survival element, it actually gets kind of dull. You get less visitors, less fauna, no flora, its all just an expanse of white, etc.

Oh yeah, well... if you're not playing on sea ice naked, why are you playing at all?

Woops.

Ice sheet is much the same as sea ice due to its lack of trees, animals, and arable land. You still need to get a raid with a parka made of decent material or you'll freeze to death. Start cutting stone immediately. If you have mountains dig into them, otherwise build around a geyser. Starvation isn't a real concern, mental breaks are still the big killer.

If you don't have mountains abuse steam geysers for both power and heat by building your base around them. Once you have hydroponics going get some cows, or other similar milkable animals, to provide meat substitutes.

I always get those two confused. Much more likely to pull it off on ice sheet. Build a shelter around a steam geyser. There is usually enough trees to at least pull that off.
