I think scenarios effect it such as if you do tribal then your chances of a tribal start are alot higher and the like
Samantha "Sam" Haxton
Valentin "Val" Antasi
Daniel "Danny" Nitro
Amelia "Engie" Flais
Christian "Wolle" Alberts
Umbra "Nighthawk" Darklight
Ralph "Humps" Brock
Yuu "Hakuja" Ito
Riesling Bacchus
There's probably 20+ more that I am leaving out but you get the picture. Some back stories are randomly generated and some are preset. The preset ones occur less often.
Edit: And some of the presets are tied to either spacer, pirate or tribal back stories factions. You won't be able to find Amelia "Engie" Flais no matter how many times you reroll on a tribal start and likewise you won't find Umbra "Nighthawk" Darklight on a crashlanded start.
I found her once too. She was 15 and a nudist. I immediately banished her from the colony before the FBI showed up.
That would also be a unique backstory assigned specifically to Emily "Emmie" Young.
Emmy is one of the few non-violent colonists I like taking. Primary skill is a cook but also tends to be skilled at social and medicine. Even if those jobs are filled, she makes for a great dedicated cleaner.
The beautiful trait is also a 100% occurrence on her, so she often ends up married to a more important colonist helping keep their mood in good spirits. She's really not bad for a stay-at-home colonist. My only real complaint is her inability to do research. A cook who can research is the ultimate house sitter.
Skye Lorne - Labor Camp Orphan / Urbworld Enforcer (she usually has good skill and flames in shooting and construction, and some skill in something else useful like mining or medicine)
Ludmilla "Milla" Fisher - Jungle Kid / Aromatherapist (she usually has good skill and flames in cooking, plants, animals, and medicine)
randomizing for a while is a thing for me, but those two, with good rolls and traits, and it is not hard to find a 3rd.
So back in a time before steam, there was backer levels that a person could opt into. Base levels were name in game and then you could create backstories that offered more options in higher tiers.
Highest tier was the pirate king. These special backstories offered more powerful bonuses than typical backstories as well as would try to spawn as leaders of factions.
Traits etc are always randomized as is age so the final character tends to still vary a lot once traits are applied and the randomizers for passions and other values.
Umbra "Nighthawk" Darklight is my backer pirate king, but I wanted to do something different. Most were meta good at combat builders. My original concept was a space pirate guy but was just too generic and werent really any tribal leaders either.
So I decided to go the classic "chosen one" design. A tribal leader focused on non combat oriented bonuses. Social and medical etc. There is the non violent aspect, but the concept was focused around the medical and social attributes. The adult trait of nonviolent was a bit of a chat with Tynan trying to think of things unique and he liked the idea of a non violent leader.
In hindsight, I might have been a bit off balance in the points allocations and too conservative compared to some other pirate king characters, but I am a roleplayer so the focus was mostly around that aspect. The backstory is however locked to that name and was cheesed by me. I had to go all B movie for the name. Name was inspired by my Honda Nighthawk motorcycle.
Thanks for sharing your "behind the scenes" look at what the backer levels were like. Umbra "Darklight" Nighthawk was one of the ones I frequently sought when I played tribal games. I really appreciated having a tribal who was a strong researcher all the time. Being non-violent wasn't a major issue for me since he was such a good healer. Should any of my tribals get injured he was quick to patch wounds because he was out of harm's way. I was more frustrated by the construction penalties and the inability to stop fires or do dumb labor. But he was serviceable and the stuff he could do he excelled at.
If I ever made one I had a similar idea. I wanted a non-violent killer, like a trap master kind of like the fictional Jig-saw. Make him a master of building, dabbling in art and possibly cooking and then make him either a cannibal or a psychopath as a locked trait. The idea being that he would build a home and be able to defend it without firing a shot or swinging a sword. A very passive-aggressive way to defend your colony. Just never had the money to afford doing it :)
Part of the consideration was a points range, tynan approved or requested revamps before any were added. So debuffing was preferred if went a bit higher or top end.
There was an eddie murphy movie many years ago called "The Golden Child" and that was sort of the feel I originally wanted, the pacifist spiritual leader/sainthood vibe. In play though, it didnt quite come off that way.
That said, if you got royalty dlc, then it works out great!
Edit: Oh, there is another way to play pacifists as well if the traits go in favor. An animal handler. That can be a full time job, but even a pacifist can release the hounds.
A pacifist who full time raises worgs is scary....
Honestly, I want whatever they were having when Tynan & co came out with these backstories.
