That being said... when they breed (not if) you will not know about it until after the 2nd trimester has started. this can be as short as a few days or even as long as a quadrum before you notice. Every species in the game has a specific gestation period.
They must be the same exact breed. Unlike IRL, a husky will not breed with a yorkshire, or a labrador. On the Rimworld, dogs only breed with the exact same species.
Only adults will breed... babies and juveniles will not breed at all.
If they are both adults, different sexes, and the same species, they will breed. It does not matter even if the other one is their sister, brother, mother, father or even great-great-grandparents as long as they are alive and kicking (not incapacitated) they will breed until the day they die. It also is noteworthy that none of the animals are monogamous... One will mate with his sister in the morning, only to mate with his grandmother in the afternoon, and daughter in the evening. If you pull up an animals social tab, it is not unusual to see a social connection that shows their father is also their uncle, cousin, and grandfather.
Breeding is slightly different with birds... Most of the rules are the same, but essentially, the female will grow an egg,,, while the egg is growing, the male will breed with them and the egg is fertilized. If there is no egg progress, there will not be any birds mating. If the female bird does not mate, an unfertilized egg (appropriate for cooking/eating) is created.
Add the forbidden mod and let the .... "More fun" begin.
