Playing against raid points?
I recently learned about raid points and now that I do the game has become much easier. Previously, I would always build lots of stuff, try for high quality stuff, build lots of art, etc. and I would constantly lose to raids that completely outclassed me. I recently started a game where my pawns basically live in squalor, but they have nice guns, and they are doing *way* better than before.

I am not personally a fan of this design because it is essentially me meta-gaming to win. Does anyone know of any good mods that retain game balance but make it so that I don't have to meta-game to win? Perhaps a time-based escalation system (balancing this is hard, maybe impossible)? Maybe some other clever mechanism for keeping the challenge up while also letting me build up nice places to live for my pawns?

Cassandra has a time-based element to her. In general though if you're looking to just play and survive come what may, turn the difficulty down. No shame in it. It's a singleplayer game, and even though I find them worthless to begin with, there's also no achievements.

Cass, just like all other STs calculate threat strength depending on your wealth + passed time.

To Op:
Give me a min, there are 2 different mods, I need to search for them.

Uh....huh... which is what I said? Were you making a point in including my reply?

There is this one:

Which changes threat calculation to be mainly time-dependent.

This mod doesn't change how threat is calculated in general but you can adjust the variables of it to your liking:

And then there is this mod which now is outdated which also changed how the calculation itself would behave. Sadly, it is not updated to 1.1

Time based danger
This one, like its title say.

Prepare for combat
This allows you to tweak "raid point" calculation values.

Edit: Ninja'd by Zane, with links.

I think I even wouldn't mind the raid point concept if it were expressed more clearly in the game. The idea that raiders are raiding you because "you have nice things" I think is fine and interesting, but it needs to be presented more clearly in-game with perhaps some mechanic for intentionally controlling raid points.

For example, not letting visitors to your zone see inside your base so word doesn't spread of your wealth, or even just a little bar that shows the power level of threats growing as you add/lose wealth.

Sorry, I cant link the mods. I'm from my junklet.

About "meta-winning" / "meta-gaming":
Wealth management is on of the many steps on the way to master the game. Its not meta-gaming.
First, you want some living space + day-by-day survivability for your pawns.
Later, as their expectations raising, you improve their living area. This raising your wealth. You improve your defense, your weapons, recruit more pawns, improve your pawns. More wealth. Oh... More wealth raise their expectations. You need to improve their living area. This is a spiral, you can't really fight against this.
Sure. You can keep your wealth as low as possible.
⚫No megabase.
⚫No more supplies, just what you need to survive the next winter.
⚫No useless loot weapons / clothes stored in your colony.
⚫No just one more husky.
⚫No legendary jade grand sculpture.
Always just what you currently need.
Food for a year. Clothes for everyone + 1 set, just in case. Bedrooms, rec room, just to fulfill colonists expectations. Defense. A bit more than needed. A few pack animals, if you want caravan. 1-2 haulers to help your colonists. Fight animals... Unlimited numbers. They are disposable, you will lose them first. What to do with all the surplus? First, you want to burn everything. Just DONT! But what then? There is one thing what don't count in your wealth, but invaluable. Faction goodwill. How to earn tons of goodwill? Gifts. Giveaway all your needles surplus. Later these factions will send you military aids if you are in a bad situation. (Sometimes on their own, sometimes you need to call them via comm console. Calling them cost goodwill. This is way you want to stack up as many as possible.)
