They don't list the live weight in game anymore for some reason, but you can look at the body size. A human is 1.0, a RimWorld Squirrel is 0.15, almost 1/6 the size of an adult human. So the thing is probably larger than your leg and coming at you without the fear of death.
It's still generally trivial for a naked and unarmed pawn to deal with one, but RNG is RNG.
Use a gun and if that don't work, use more gun
Damage and death mechanics are utterly stupid, but trying to hit the little pricks is at least somewhat realistic.
They do actually. Squirrels move at 5.1 c/s while the base movement speed for a colonist is 4.6. It's far from 10 times faster obviously, but you can't really kite them very long. One person running in circles with the squirrel chasing them while ranged pawns shoot at it will buy you some free shots, but the squirrel will catch up.
