Why is one mad squirrel more of a threat to me than a bunch of bandits with swords?

a) RNGeebus is a prick, with a nasty sense of humor.

b) Squirrels are very small, fast, and have a very high evasion chance in melee. So 1v1, they simply overwhelm many foes.

You take a bunch of bandits with swords more seriously than a mad squirrel. If you drafted up all your guys for both situations you'd see how much less threatening the squirrel is with the amount of overkill.

Actually, no, squirrels really ARE one of the more dangerous animals in RW. It's not just a perception gap.

i started with 1 naked guy once and the 1st event was a mad squirrel and i just managed to kill it but died after lol

Size multiplier. While any one hit is absolutely going to destroy one of their body parts or outright kill them because the size modifier reduces health on body parts, it increases their melee and ranged evasion enough so that they effectively shrug off as much damage as cataphract armor.

If you can walk them into a trap or hit them with an explosive weapon they go down like nothing.

I literally just lost a permadeath colony to a mad squirrel because my colonists couldn't hit the damn thing. Everyone died.

Equip a melee weapon next time.

Thats simple, its because your Pawns are mostly useless meatsacks before they find some good weapons and armor and NUKES! ... especially if you dont use the mod Prepare Carefuly or something.
But 1 squirrel is not more dangerous than 16 Alpha Beavers, at least not back in b.18.

Good luck.

I had a soldier armed with a rifle and full body flak armor, and a worker with a knife. Neither of them were able to land a hit and both of them died before he went after the kid.

Got to be honest, I find that incredibly hard to believe. It takes a squirrel a very large number of attacks to down a colonist, I think they have like 1 DPS and the tiny hits mean a colonist will go down in pain rather than any serious wounds. If your three colonist sat there and missed every single attack for like 5 minutes straight while a single squirrel nibbled on them until they died, that is some crazy RNG, even if they all had 0 melee skill.

1 colonist had 0 melee skill, 1 had 4, and 1 was incapable of melee altogether.

Plays permadeath, then gets what he asked for, comes to forum to complain about getting what he asked for.

Hm, k

It's a freaking SQUIRREL! It's a single rodent, it shouldn't be able to wipe out a colony by itself, let alone take down a soldier in full body flak armor.

Um... You shouldn't be able to mine usable machine/electronic components from the ground, either ^^'.

Rimworld squirrels are several times bigger than normal squirrels, they weigh up to 10KG which is almost 20 times heavier than the usual squirrel weight of 500-600 grams.
