Steal Siege Mortars or Kill Siegers before they can even set stuff?
Should I reinstall enemy mortars after a siege is over for my later advantage?

A siege has arrived and I'm in trouble thinking if they build a mortar which I can steal and use for myself or kill them before they build a mortar and give me possibly some threat? Right now I have High Explosive Shells on Siegers. Meanwhile they can get Incendiary when they run out of ammo or Incendiary shells can come in another raid. I don't have Royalty so don't put tips for it lol

Don't they spawn in the materails to build one, just kill and take the resources to build one

My answer to this would depend on how well equipped you are and if your base can handle a hit or 2.

If I'm lucky and/or my base can take a hit I'll generally wait till they've built their mortars and then I'll start sniping and draw them into an ambush when they abandon their camp and race at my pawns.

If I can't take the hits, or to early in the game I'll attack them the moment their shells hit the ground. Normally I'll target their shells and hope I can get a few hits that causes them to pop.

Their longest range unit (Bolt Action Rifle shooter) is manning the Mortar which gives me a small advantage for sniping until they fight back, also I have Expanded Turrets mod which lets me carry my Mounted DP-28 into the battlefield to give me a lot of supresses. I have only one wooden building and all other are either steel (only 2) or stone (inner buildings have less hp stones such as marble for beauty stat and outer walls have high hp for extra protection). And I have 7 mini-turrets which can easily get destroyed by mortars and I don't have resources to build them back. So I guess I should charge now or now. Meanwhile enemies don't have any armor but my colonists have. The thing is my fighters are 4 and theirs are 8, which makes me weaker in numbers and puts me in danger for movement speed when I must run away.

I have 2 with Heavy SMG and Plate Armor (one has Recon Helmet and other has Advanced Helmet), 1 with Bolt Action Rifle, Flak Jacket and Marine Helmet, 1 with a pretty low shooting skill, revolver (he will be carrying the DP-28 for supressing fire) he has no helmet, he isn't prepared for a such situation

Build traps and kite them into it. Or sacrifice (potentially) a pawn and shoot their shells on the ground and watch them all go boom. You won't kill many of them, but you might get lucky.

A siege has arrived and I'm in trouble ...
...
I was strong enough to rush them and force them to flee leaving behind 2 steel siege mortars.
I only had 5 members armed with bolt rifles (edit: forgot to mention, i crafted 5 excellent rifles, they have better to hit chance). I made them each carry a wall section with them and place it when they arrived so they had good cover.

I use the minifyeverything mod, which makes moving pre built structures without dismantling them. I did suffer some injuries, but nothing major.

And i got 2 free mortars and some other loot from it. None of my people are Royals with psy-powers.

You should do what you need too. :) Good luck have fun.

IIRC in my play throughs, I can't uinstall mortars, so I have to deconstruct them. In such a case, i just try to rush the raiders , or make them come after me, after all the shells and steel have been dropped off. That way, I get the materials anyway without necessarily having it be a mortar gun.

That shouldnt't be the case, at least in my experience pre-1.1. There will be designated pawns to man that mortar and a pawn who isn't assigned to it won't take over their job.

That's been one of the easier ways to mitigate the damage from a mortar Raid - Snipe the pawns who are building, thus designated to crew, the mortar and the Raid can't fire the mortar.

The best solution for a Mortar Raid is to start shelling them with your mortars as you move pawns to a rallying point from which they'll then launch an assault. If you have snipers and can get them in position before you attack, you can quickly take out that mortar crew and any really dangerous Raiders before your assault goes in. And, don't forget to halt your own counter-battery fire before your troops get to "ground zero." :)

I personally let them build a mortar, trigger them to attack, then leave the mortar. Next raid that comes from that direction likes to gather around the mortar before attacking it, the resulting explosion ended a tribal raid one time before it even attacked me. It's not really the most effective strategy but it makes me laugh every time it works.

My experience is siege teams are suicidal.

I read all the posts with interest but I've never seen a siege team that landed on the other side of the map allowing them time to wait for their drop. They spawn literally beside me and I jump them. So my experience has been to just collect their drop after the fight is over.

I wonder what I'm doing on my bases that the AI sends them so close (beside my base). The only thing I can think of is that I don't have protective walls with kill-boxes. AI probably got confused.

My philosophy is that you can always build mortars.

So I say, blow em up ASAP. :)
